Credit balance under $10 on a closed account, kiss it good-bye

I recently ported my old AT&T TDMA number over to Verizon. I had
been on a $14.99 corporate plan less 23% discount for 60
minutes. I got my bill last month and paid it, and this month
got a bill showing the corporate discount plus tax, for a credit
of $3.93, since I guess the corporate discount is always a month
late in showing up. The bill did not say anything about how to
get the money back so I called customer service. The person I
spoke to (from the business customer service) told me that
because the amount due me was less than $10, they were
"absorbing" it to cover the expense of closing my account (or
some such BS). I could not believe it. I told her I guess I
should just not have paid the previous month's bill and waited
for the final bill. She actually said "yes, that would have been
an option". I guess being a former customer there was little
reason for them to be nice to me.

Anyway, I guess this is just a small penalty to be able to say
that I am a former Cingular customer. I have never seen such
incompetent customer service. I was on Autopay and for some
reason they did not like my credit card info (they claimed it
expired even though I had just entered it and the card did NOT
expire) so my bill did not get paid. I was never notified that
the bill was not paid (I did not generally look at the bill
since I never went over and I had it set up to be paid) until I
got a nastygram in the mail after 3 months telling me that I was
going to be submitted for collection if I did not pay. People
may say that Verizon sucks, but I can't believe that they are
anywhere near as bad as Cingular.

Tell them you want it in writing.
Then put you account at 9.95 less than one month ahead.
Then attach a copy of the letter you got with the next months bill for 9.95.
Inform them that you are "Absorbing it to cover the cost of paying the bill"

I have no idea what 'put you account at 9.95 less than one month
ahead' means, but I was going to suggest sending them another $7
to bring the balance to over $10.  Course you'd be taking a chance
with that 7 to get back your 4, but hey, the entertainment value might
be worth the 7 :).

Actually, my luck they would have absorbed the $3.93 before crediting
the $7 and I'd lose that as well (although I just checked and my
account does still show it as a balance). However, if I sent them $10,
then either way I'd have to get that back (unless they come up with
some other unwritten BS rule). It's almost worth a shot..

Hmm.. I just went to pay the bill and got hit with this:

<<
In order to reinstate your account for service you must pay your
account balance in full. A $25 per phone line reinstatement fee will
appear on your next invoice in accordance with the terms and conditions
of your service agreement.

Wouldn't that be a hoot if they tried that?

The policy is to not send checks out or balances less thatn $10. If th
cust insists, they will send the check for any balance. You just hav
to push it a bit. If they don't, ask for a resolution specialist

This just kills me that they can sit on 10 checks, but if you own them
$10 they will shut your service off.

My $3.93 balance is still there, maybe I should just send them
an electronic payment for $6.07 and then tell them I want my $10
back.
