This summer I was in central WI (between Oshkosh and Portage) and
encountered a fairly large area with no signal. Calling Cingular got me
nowhere fast, just "we don't have service there." Of course last year with
my old Nokia (non-GSM) phone it was no problem. Now I have a v551 and no
signal. My brother in law has a v180 and he claims that he complained and
something was changed- a code to put into his phone?- but he doesn't
remember what it was, but he now can use his phone in the same town. Any
ideas, suggestions? I have to return there at the end of the week. The
local "guy" in town suggested looking for a used phone that would take my
sim but not be a gsm phone. If that would work, any suggestions?
Thanks,
Paul

There isn't such a thing.

Sure there is - they just don't sell them any more. GAIT phones,
such as the Nokia 6340i, work on analog, TDMA and GSM.
They take a SIM chip, but do all three.
You can find them on eBay. I wish I hadn't given mine away.
The only problem with those is getting Cingular to activate a GAIT SIM.
They've gotten pissy about it.

I can't speak for cingular but up that way us t-mobile users roam on
einstein pcs. (which seems to cover the areas you mentioned. ) For others,
do you guys roam at all on einstein pcs? What comes up when you use
http://compass.t-mobile.com ? I know what your thinking.. Why?? Well, if
it's listed as roaming up there, its einstein pcs. If it's in compass, it's
1900mhz most of the time..

That won't work. SIM's only work in GSM phones.

Specifically what part of Wisconsin are you in? Through Wisconsin, I
find that I had more coverage with my GSM phone than I did with my TDMA
phone. I roamed either on Einstein PCS or i wireless where Cingular
coverage was not available.

I was in Wautoma, thirty miles west of Oshkosh. There are other carriers
there and yes, I thought I should be able to roam, but there was no signal.
Going west, I set the phone to alert when the signal dropped or picked up.
It was spotty all the way from Wautoma to the Minnesota border. FYI, i had
no trouble all the way up in Bemidji, MN.

Why wouldn't the phone just roam to another network? No roaming charges
apply. What does roaming mean if not connect to another network?

Was in Rhinelander in the North Woods over the summer with my V551 and had
no problem. May be your phone is not set up right...

Check out the map at Cingular.com- Rhinelander is secure in the middle of a
big ol' solid Cingular area. If I was still going up to Mercer I would have
been good to go.... but try going north of Fond Du Lac (Oshkosh) and then
going west, pretty much all the way to Minnesota; the no signal and we don't
care area far outweighs the no signal and we will get there eventually area.

PS- this weekend I hit a couple of spots in Wautoma which had a usable
signal. Is this a sign of things to come or do cell phone signals bounce
like AM radio signals- there was a heavy cloud cover virtually all weekend.
My cell also reset the time ahead four hours for almost one whole day-which
I figure has to be somewhere near Greenland since Sweden is 7 hrs ahead of
the US.

Not the latter, so probably the former.

I'm not exactly sure how the signals work with reflections, but I find
in rural parts of North Dakota, signal is much better on cloudy days in
winter when there's snow than any other time. I've noticed signal is
better when cloudcover is present versus clear skies, signal is better
with no foliage on the trees, and signal is better with snow versus
without snow. The winters are long enough there that you can test all
if you want.
