Cellular Phone Forum / Providers / Cingular / November 2005Auto update and daylight/standard time
Why isn't my phone updating with the change to standard time? It is set for auto update. If I set it for manual and then set the correct standard time, it is ok. But then if I set it back to auto update, it reverts to daylight time (a couple of minutes off at that). Doesn't the cell provider (Cingular) do all of this stuff automatically? Then, when I get up this a.m. (Monday) they are set correctly. Cingular must think time changes midnight Sunday or something. That, or just like no customer service on Sundays there is no other service on Sundays as well. I think I've noticed some phones dont update until they receive a call. Just be patient, it will happen. If you are needing your time changed on your phone for other reasons, do it manually and leave the auto-update feature off for a few days. > Why isn't my phone updating with the change to standard time? The GSM time signal is a service add-on, and thus the accuracy is dependent on the network operator. My guess is that Cingular's time updates will get better as network integration is completed. My wife's phone hadn't updated so I cycled the power on/off and it updated. Location is Portland OR area. But both phones are still 2 minutes behind, as they have been since we got them a month ago. I thought GSM was supposed to be the "latest and greatest". I can't believe that with all of this high tech around us the system operators can't get the time of day correct. If the centralized clock isn't set accurately everyone's auto update will be wrong. GSM isn't like CDMA where it's an absolute integral part of how the system operates. Most GSM systems don't even have NITZ (Network Initiated Time Zone.) If the auto time update's error is too much for you just choose manual time change and turn off automatic time and date update. - - I turned mine off and back on and it updated here in North Texas. > In San Antonio, Texas. A lot of it depends on the phone, and the setting for that phone. I've had several Nokias, and they seem to only update when you power them on; there's a setting for that. The automatic update never seemed to work correctly. Then there's my Samsung x426, which doesn't seem to update at all. I disabled the network time setting on my Cingular Treo because it was always off by several minutes. This was causing me to be late for meetings since I use the calendar and alarm feature to handle this stuff. Instead, I sync the time to my computer, which periodically syncs to a time server. I also couldn't help noticing that the Treo changed itself for the end of Daylight Savings, because for some reason, an alarm went off (at 2 in the morning!) when it happened. I have no clue if it was the Treo itself or a clock I installed.
