Advice on selecting a cell phone

My company has Cingular as its cell phone carrier. For the past 4
years I have been using a Nokia model 5165. It has been a good phone
and provides me with two options, a hands free unit capability in my
car and the ability to connect my laptop to it and use it as a modem
(via a 3COM Megahertz card, mod 3cxm756).

Now the 5165 seems to be going away. Small flip phones are replacing
the Nokia 5165. Is there a phone that is supported by Cingular, that
has data capability for my laptop and has a hands free option for my
car?

You can do a "virtual shop" and check out all of the Cingular sold
phones available to you and compare features and accessories. Since
you already have a Nokia compatible handsfree kit, you may want to see
if you can find another Nokia that does what you want, as the data
connections will probably be the same.

Is the handsfree kit specific to the 5165, or to Nokia, or is it Bluetooth?

I might use that as an anchor point for new phone selection, if it wasn't
too limiting.

I have a Motorola V551 from US-Cingular. This has bluetooth, so it can be
used with some car's built in bluetooth capability. There are also car
kits offered. The bluetooth also allows me to connect it to the laptop for
internet access, although I don't have the modem abilities. If that were
important, I would look into the CSD option for about $4 per month.

You might also consider getting a PC-card that would access the Cingular
network directly, and not tether your phone. This would also be internet
access, and not specifically a true dialing modem like your 3cxm756.

The non-dialing access to the internet might be much faster than your 3Com.
100KbpS for the tethered phone and 150KbpS for the cards.

What "cingular features" do you have to support dialing with the
combination that you have now? What kind of speed do you get? Do you need
dialup, or just internet access?
