Or ripping whole CDs to large MP3 files.

In theory no, but you won't be able to play your songs purchased from
itunes.
I'd just as soon buy a non-broken mobile, and use fairplay to fix the
drm issue. That way, any phone that supports aac (quite a few, based
on a quick look) can play the files.
