Is there anything that prevents someone from simply loading up the card with
MP3's and using another app to play them?

Or ripping whole CDs to large MP3 files.

In theory no, but you won't be able to play your songs purchased from
itunes.

I'd just as soon buy a non-broken mobile, and use fairplay to fix the
drm issue.  That way, any phone that supports aac (quite a few, based
on a quick look) can play the files.
