Verizon sort of screwed me over. I'm in the process of opening
and office and the DSL install that was scheduled for yesterday
may take another two weeks. In the meantime I'm paying
developers whos ability to do work is crippled without
internet connectivity. Dial up is far too slow, is there
some sort of highspeed (or even medium speed) cellular
based option I can use to get up and running quickly?
What sort of equipment would I need to either be able
to get machines connected to it by 802.11b/g or ethernet?
Thanks for any ideas.
I'm located in Newburyport, MA about 30 miles
north of Boston.

Yes:
1. Check with neighbors for sharing of Internet, perhaps over (secured) WiFi.
2. Satellite Internet; e.g., <http://www.mydirecway.com/>.
3. Cingular UMTS or EDGE.
4. Verizon EV-DO.

Depends on the choice you make.

1. was the first thing i checked - no good
2. no good, neither is cable, landlord restrictions and likely too long to
install, usually a lead time on install dates
3/4. im now looking at EVDO and a Junxion box (EVDO to 802.11g router). I'm
just trying to find data
on actual thruput speeds for EVDO in my area (zip 01950).

I think that would be both impractical and a violation of the Service
Agreement -- each person should have individual service.

Don't particularly care about TOS, don't know that many of us do. I always
appreciate your technical help, but the TOS broken record is
getting a bit stale. I didn't even bother to read them. Anyway
I picked up a Verizon EVDO V620 card and we are in business.
Instead of the router, I just shared out my connection to the rest
of the LAN via the built in XP feature. I'm probably just returning
this anyway as long as Verizon gets my DSL installed within the
15 day window I have, but it is certainly much quicker than I was
expecting and I'm very tempted to keep it.

Should I expect any better thruput if I buy an EDGE card
vs what I see on my Nokia 6320? I don't know my actual
6320 rates (which I think is class 5) but I know that loading
a text based site via S60 Opera is slower than any dialup
I've ever used (and I've used 300 baud acoustic couplers).
It would be much easier and quicker just to add a card
to my Cingular account that open a new one with
Sprint or VZN and go through the whole credit check
thing. I hate giving out my SSN and I hate credit checks
for something so trivial.

EGPRS(EDGE) speeds with a Class 10 device (like the Nokia 6320) are on the
order of 150 Kbps in good signal areas.
