IS this true... Cingular will unlock your Phone for free??

Went to the local Phone store and the guy behind the counter said that if
I want to unlock the moto v551 all I have to do is call CS and request
that the phone be unlocked so I can go to Europe with the Phone. In turn
Cingular calls MOTOrola and they (motorola) send an unlocking code to my
phone and voila! the 551 is unlocked.

Also the same guy said that when you sign up for a one or two year
contract your minutes do rollover...UNTIL the term of your contract (one
or two years)is up. Then, he said, your phone is reset back to "0" and you
have to start over again.

Is any of this true? I have no idea on the unlocking the phone part and
what I've read of the user agrement leads me to believe your minutes roll
over for a rolling calender year. That is to say, your minutes acumulate
for the last 12 calender months but not before that.

Don't know about the unlocking, but my rollover minutes certainly
didn't vanish at the end of my contract period.

Current actual Rollover terms

Rollover Minutes: Rollover Minutes accumulate and expire through 12
rolling bill periods. Bill Period 1 (activation) unused Anytime
Minutes will not carry over. Bill Period 2 unused Anytime Minutes
will begin to carry over. Rollover Minutes accumulated starting with
Bill Period 2 will expire each bill period as they reach a 12 bill
period age. Rollover Minutes will also expire immediately upon
default or if customer changes to a non-Rollover plan. Rollover
Minutes are not redeemable for cash or credit and are not
transferable. Night and Weekend and Mobile to Mobile minutes do not
carry over.

You can go to Europe with a Cingualr calling plan. It is expensive,
though, and a few minutes conversation with anyone would pay for unlocking
the phone and getting a SIM from a street vendor.

I requested an unlock code via email on the "contact us" web page.
I received email about how that would violate my warranty, but a code would
be coming soon via email. Yesterday, I received email that my EMEI had
been submitted incorrectly, asking me to verify the proper one. I did
that, and now I am waiting.

So, it might depend on how much of a hurry you are in. I started this
around Nov 6 or 7, got the first email Nov 8, and I might have been
unlocked by now (16th) if someone hadn't fat-fingered my EMEI.

A co-worker drove a few blocks from the office and paid $20 to have his
Cingular phone unlocked right away.

you can try to see if cingular will send you the unlock code but most of the
times they are too dumb and you will end up getting your PUK code and that
wont unlock your phone. you will end up messing it up entering the wrong
code in too many times if its not a motorola then you would need to send it
in to get it flashed to unlock it.

about the rollover, NO that is wrong.. thats not how it works..
basically you cant have rollover from the same month twice.. so if you still
have unused minutes in jan, the old jan rollover minutes expire and the new
unused jan minutes get collected at the end.

so basically your rollover will never get set to 0 and start over you just
lose the few you had left from the month your in last year.
