Hello,

I purchased cingular's 5.99/month international calling service and now
I'm in Germany and can't seem to place even local calls.

The network is Vodafone.de, but any network doesnt work

If I try to dial an international number (+44 555 555 555) it doesn't
work. I'm using 00 for the international access code, then 44 for the
country code, and the rest of the number.

If I just try a local number, 98 88 8-0 or 0711 98 88 80 I get the same
problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Actually, I figured this out by calling cingular international via my
hotel phone. It seems I was blatantly lied to by cingular. The service
was never set up, despite me calling last week to get it set up.

Thanks Cingular for throwing a wrench in my business plans.

It looks like you are at $0.99 per minute in Germany.  A quick look shows
prepaid SIMS at about $0.07 per minute, but with an upfront fee of $60, and
whatever it costs to get a phone unlocked locally.

Depending on how much you are going to talk, you might want to look into
getting a German pre-paid SIM.

It's actually much cheaper than that -- see

Giving that list about as much time as the Google search that I did, I see
lower "activation" fees, but higher per minute.

I'll keep that web site, though.  Looks like a good international
reference.

Before you buy the prepaid German SIM make sure your Cingular phone is
unlocked!!!!

In my original post, I suggested inquiring about an unlock at the local
vendor in Germany that sells the cards.

I recently received an unlock code for my phone from Cingular, but I can't
test it without having a card.  I suppose that the local vendors that
charge $20 have a SIM on hand to cause the phone to ask for the unlock
code.

After repeated attempts Cingular has not managed to switch on my
international roaming, in the 2 years I have been with them. In the end I
simply bought a SIM for the countries I visit (UK, Germany and India).
Having an unlocked V400 made this possible.

The "+" is the international access code -- *don't* use "00"!
Dial that number in parens just as you have it!
