I plan to go to Latin America this winter, where they have TDMA. My
Motorola V400 is unlocked. Are there any risks to getting a SIM down there,
and then not having my phone work upon return to the US?
I don't want to be stuck in the airport on the way back without a phone, cuz
for some reason it won't recognize the original Cingular SIM. I guess as
long as I protect it from damage it'll be ok?

Yes. Of all the things you might worry about, that should not be one.
International travelers swap SIM cards all the time without recognition
issues.

there is no risk of getting a sim card, your V400 came unlocked and is quad
band..
most of the time if you go get a local pre-paid sim card it comes with free
incoming calling and sms.
