My cingular coverage is almost perfect in my area...except in my
backyard and thereabouts. Works perfectly in the house but when
I step outside, right outside of the room I was just having a
perfectly good call in, it breaks up and stays that way for at
least a 300 yard area around the place, open fields, entirely
unobstructed.
Is there a reasonable explanation for that?

Wouldn't consider myself a telecom expert but Heere's a theory: your
yard is in a location where two cells interfere with one another.  So in
the yard, the signals get clobbered like two people talking at the same
time at nearly the same volume.  When you go into your house, one of the
signals is attenuated much more than the other.  Maybe you have aluminum
siding on once side of the house :-)  So in your house, you can access
the stronger cell OK without experiencing detrimental interference from
the other.  Maybe?

This really presents a dilemma in physics based solutions:

Whether to go with the standard aluminum foil hat or the black stretchy
garbage bag over the head.
