Surely after two years you are out of contract and can switch. In the
San Francisco Bay Area, prior to the merger with AT&T, Cingular coverage
was so bad in some areas, that the day the contract was over, people
would change to another carrier.

Very funny, good job. Maybe Verizon or Sprint would buy that video from you.
Reminds me of the video that one Saturn owner did, though at least his
video ended with his car in flames, and had children singing "I'm the
Saturn Lemon."
I used to have to walk down the block to use my Cingular phone, and I
would stand under a streetlight while on conference calls for work, so I
could take notes while on the call. I think that the neighbors thought
that I was a drug dealer. I canceled the day my contract ended. My wife
had no coverage at all in her office. All this in a very urban part of
Silicon Valley. Things have improved since Cingular got AT&T's 800 Mhz
coverage in this area, but now T-Mobile is fighting to install more
towers to improve the old Cingular network.

That's why I switched TO Cingular (from Verizon).

What structures, power lines, steel towers, mountain ranges, nuclear
reactors, etc. are in your vicinity? If you live in a high-rise apartment
building, for instance, you can expect poor signal strength. If, on the
other hand, you live in the middle of Kansas and you can look out your
living room window and see the Cingular tower, there is no excuse for a poor
signal.

Unless:
1. You have a TDMA phone and the tower is all GSM (or vice versa).
2. The antenna array at the tower is facing in a different direction.
3. Your phone only has the 1900 band and the tower is 850 (or vice versa).
etc.
In other words, it's not that simple.

I did notice the 'eng(ineering?)concepts.net' address; wondered what kind of
engineer was having trouble with radio waves. It's an interesting web site
based on magnets and related fields.
The cellular interference may be caused by a perpetual engine. ;-)
