I go to L.A. for a few days, I come back and lookie here! My T62u is
pulling 4 bars of beautiful GSM signal in my apartment in Houston.
Gotta love that 800 MHz GSM signal, it's so not flaky like the 1900
MHz signals (here in Houston/Spring)...

Now off to Cingular Monday morning and get that GPRS activated.
Shouldn't be painful...     :)

Gotta love what? My T-Mobile phone works in my house and my moms Cingular
shows "cingular" in the front of the house and nothing anywhere else. Still
nothing other than ATT/T-Mobile on 225 in Pasadena, She has a Nokia 6200. It
comes on and off. :(

Hopefully it still said "Cingular" !!!!!  Have they officially turned
GSM on in Houston--they haven't in Dallas yet.

On my old TDMA plan if the phone lost the Cingular signal it would
switch to ATT but I couldn't place a call.  On the GAIT plan I've had
the 6340i lose a Cingular TDMA signal a few times (especially in the the
local Home Depot) -- in every case the phone switched to Voicestream GSM
-- BUT calls still worked -- incoming and outgoing.  I'm on the Texas-
wide plan but I'm going to be carefully looking at this months detail
billing to make sure they don't try to slip roaming charges in.

The fact that the phone finds VS GSM instead of Cingular AMPS does
answer the question I had about where AMPS is in the search order --
LAST.

The 6340i doesn't have GPRS so I won't have that option.  Someone
elsewhere said Wireless Internet (CSD) was no longer available once GSM
went live -- only Wireless Internet Express (GPRS).  I hope they're
wrong.

AMPS is probably last in the search order because AMPS roaming the most
expensive for several (if not all) carriers.

Any idea where Austin's at in this list?

It does.

It was supposed to have gone live statewide on 9/13.

Correct.

They are right. Circuit Switched Wireless Internet (as programmed into
the phone) is not working. I was unable to contact Cingular ... YET!!

Apparently I was wrong - you can keep Wireless Internet in a GSM
market. I finally got hold of Cingular, and that is what they said. I
still went for the GPRS, and it is pretty slow.   See next post...
