I use far more minutes than I think I use. Could Cingular be sending a
signal to my phone upping the minutes and making me think I'm using
more than I do? I'm not the only one who thinks this. I used the phone
a few times Saturday and next thing I know there is 1.28 hours on the
timer. Any comments other than calling me paranoid?
Most likely your looking at rounded off minutes. Very few of our
shorter calls actually end under a minute. When you go over a minute
they round it up to the next minute. This is standard practice. It's
how they make a profit.
When Cingular does send stuff to your phone its usually an upgrade on
something like your sids, sometimes a written message. I'm sure someone
out here knows what all gets sent- but it's not an illegal pocket liner.

Yep, you're paranoid. Why on earth would the nations second largest
wireless carrier need to inflate your minutes to make more money? Even
if there WAS a way to do it, they wouldn't do it due to the apocalyptic
fallout if such activity was discovered.
William is correct, your minutes of use are rounded to the next full
minute. This is standard practice at most all carriers. The best thing
you can do to keep track of your minutes is to stop looking at the call
timer in your phone. Until the manufacturers get on the same page with
the carriers, they're useless features on your phone.
Try registering your account at cingular.com and keep an eye on your
minutes over the course of the month that way. Bear in mind that whether
you use the online account manager, call the automated system or speak
to customer service, there's always a lag in the total minutes used.
It's information offered as a guide, not realtime tracking.
Finally, try to remember that the people at Cingular Wireless, or any
other wireless carrier, are just that... people. They aren't the
collective offspring of Ebenezer Scrooge looking to bilk you for every
possible cent. Truth be told, most CSRs look for ways to save you money
and give you the best possible service. They're graded on calls every
day and those who mistreat, or are dishonest with customers will be
promptly escorted to the call center door. I've seen it.
