On my Motorola v551, every time I disconnect the browser, it reports how
many KBytes I have used. I make mental note of how many pennies that would
be at $0.01 pay as you go. The information is also available under recent
calls on the v551. google.com/glm is about $3 per session at that rate.
I could do that five times in a month and be cheaper than the unlimited
plan. There are also other plans, with data limits.
The data is charged by data bytes, not time connected.

Another thing that can run up the data charges is an email client configured
to check your email regularly. Mine is set to check very 30 mins, which
averages about 10 KB, or about 1500 KB/month. Add it what it costs to read
mail, and that alone fully justifies the cost of unlimited data even without
such things as GLM (which is very, very cool, and which I now use frequently).

Take a look at your bill's data summary for the past couple of months.
