Why does this forum even exist anymore if the answer to someones question is
simply to tell them to search Google? I like to make the assumption that
people are smart enough to have thought of that and have already tried that
and couldn't find the answer they're looking for so they're here looking for
answers.

If you don't have an answer Navas then you're not obligated to post. If you
don't know then don't post.

[posting corrected -- please don't switch posting styles (top vs bottom) in
mid-thread -- it's confusing, and considered a bit rude.  Thanks.]

It doesn't exist to answer the same questions over and over.

Netiquette is to first try to find the answer on your own, my response showed
how to do that with Google.  The first link in the results held the answer.
Did you even bother to check?

That's also why we now have a FAQ, which is regularly posted to this group, as
well as a link to the FAQ in every article I post.

Based on long experience I can tell you that's an invalid assumption.

Your post was of course worse than mine, since it had no useful content, and
violated the charter.  If you don't have anything substantive to say, then you
should take your own advice.  And if you really want to help, come help work
on the FAQ.

Well JohnF,
Can you think of anyone other than an supernatural being who can
answer this post without asking more questions? What model phone for
instance? What service? We had people with many models and different
services asking questions in here. So, it seems to me that the link
Navas provided has a starting point for them to look for the answer to
there quesion, while you on the other hand provided nothing but
fodder!!!!!
My kill file is getting larger each day with these trolls....

No I can't think of anyone who might answer the post without more
information and I don't see how telling them to go elsewhere gets that
information from them to be able to give them a useful answer. Maybe asking
those questions would have been a better response. Or if Navas didn't want
to take the time then just not post anything?

I'm just tired of the inane stuff that gets talked about and when someone is
actually looking for something they get told to go somewhere else. Navas
feels he has to respond to every post whether he knows the answer or not. If
he doesn't know he just makes something up or tells them to go elsewhere.

As I said in my response I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and making
the assumption they've looked and didn't find anything. You might just have
to excuse someone if they don't exactly ask a question the way you need to
provide useful information. If Navas really wants to be helpful he could ask
those questions. If he didn't make flipant responses in EVERY thread he
might not mind taking the time to actually be useful.

I kind of agree with you.  It seems to me that if you want an answer to
a question, it would be better to ask in a newsgroup dedicated to the
subject, than to use any search engine and get a lot of unrelated junk.
And if someone does not feel like answering your question then they
need not post at all.

Google searches aside, would you let the group know which phone you are
using (assuming it is GSM and using the Cingular network). Once we have this
information there are people here who are wiling to offer you some pointers
as to where you might find what you need.

John, sometimes you don't do yourself any favors with the response you give.
You mean well and technically you may be correct with your response, but is
it user friendly?

Regards,

David.

And from this link I am supposed to deduce what? As I was saying, sometimes
the answers may be technically correct, but not user friendly. Don't act
like an a.shole and I won't treat you like one.

I think so.  Many others do too.  Sorry you don't agree.
