Home area is GSM but spend a lot of time in non-GSM areas.

I currently have a Nokia gait phone with Cingular Nation GAIT service.
Much of the time I am in northern Wisconsin in areas not having GSM.
With GAIT being killed what are people doing in these situations?  I
would like an updated phone but GAIT phones are not offered anymore.

Is Cingular discontinuing their GAIT service, or are you referring to
the eventual shutdown of the TDMA network? AMPS will likely remain in
service in rural areas for many more years, since the cost to construct
enough towers to provide equivalent coverage is very high. So a phone
that was GSM+AMPS would be good, but there's no chance of that happening.

Your best bet may be to switch to Sprint or Verizon, because you'll get
CDMA+AMPS, both of which are more widespread than GSM in the U.S..
