I am thinking of buying this docking station, but the following blurb
concerns me.  I have 2 land phone lines in my house, one provided by my
employer.  I think that means that I have 3 wires, but I am not really
sure.  Would that be the case, and therefore, this product not work?

"MERGE lets you use any 2-wire home telephone to make and receive
cellular calls."

Yes, it would work.

The phrase "any 2-wire home telephone" describes the common telephone
and telephone lines in your house, that any Trimline or Princess phone
would plug into. This would exclude any proprietary phone systems like
an office uses. In other words, if you can buy a Walmart telephone and
it works, then the Cidco unit would also work.

You would have 4 wires, what we call two pairs. But that would be a
really old house as most anything built in the last 20 years most likely
has 4 pair cabling.

Bottom line, yes it would work on any ONE of the two telephone lines you
have.

Thanks for the response.  How did you know I have a Princess phone?  ;)

But note he actually HAS 2 land lines and is thus USING two pairs. I
think the Cidco is using an unused pair to backfeed the cellular to the
extension phones in the house (their install manual is horrible)--they
appear to be using a small inline converter/splitter at each extension
to access both the original line and the cellular line.  An unusual
method--the other brands feed both signals on one line but need to be
installed upstream from extensions--but it would allow simultaneous use
of land line and cellular.  According to their doc if you already use
both lines you can't use extensions--you can only use whatever is
plugged directly into the aux port at the base--they recommend a multi-
handset cordless system in that situation.

Actually there are other options.  Like you said newer houses may be
wired with 4 pairs with two pair not connected to the jack.  If he can
access the outside box he could rewire it moving the work phone to
another pair and only at the work phone tap into that pair.  Otherwise
every jack would have to be rewired. If it's only 2 pair wire AND he can
get to the box the work phone could be taken off the 2nd house pair and
a direct wire run to the work phone. A 3rd option might be to drop his
personal line and only use cellular--that would free up a pair.

Pretty complicated for a non-technical person--the OP might need to hire
a professional.

Thanks for the bad news!   My house was built in 1963.  I am not opposed
to getting rid of the 2nd line. Would that solve the problem?

OK, wasn't aware that the Cidco unit acts like a "Central Office" and
powers his other phones.

That would not be a problem, but you would want to disconnect the house
lines from the new disconnected 2nd line from the telephone company side
as it may still have "talk battery", but no dial tone. Since you have an
old house, most like you would simply cut the black and yellow wires
from the station protector on the back outside wall.

I would recommend looking in the yellow pages for someone that does this
work. Look under Telephone Systems or Telephone Equipment.

Thinking...here's what *I* would do. Don't plug the Cidco unit into any
phone jacks at all. Simply get a good cordless phone and plug the base
unit into the Cidco. When your cellphone rings, the cordless phone will
ring.
