How do I know that my cell phone is Unlocked

This may be a stupid question, but I tried to unlock my phone, but th
message flashed up on the screen so fast I could not read it. How do
know if I unlocked it correctly

Install a SIM card from another carrier. If it works, then it's
unlocked.
