novatel pc modem on cingular - not working with outlook

i have a strange issue

ordered the cingular pc modem service and novatel gsm/g3 modem.  everything
installed fine, internet works fine.  im in a g3 market, so the speeds are
pretty good (about 750kb down, about 50 up)

but outlook doesnt work right.  outlook express doesnt either.

this is what i found;  when there are no NEW emails (ie no undownloaded
emails) on the mail server, everything appears fine.  i can send email, and
the pop connection connects and there is no indication of an issue.  i can
even use the test connection in outlook and that says its ok as well.

but when there is a new (not previously downloaded) email, it gives me an
error message, something about disconnected from the server, call your isp
etc.

i tracked it down to this; when the cingular software is installed, this
happens.  Even when i dont install the modem.  even when i dont install the
modem
if i deinstall the cingular connect software everything is back to normal.

any ideas?  kinda makes the modem etc. useless.  guess i can use web mail
(and i will for our christmas trip), but what a pain!

perhaps this is just novatel?  or just that software?   has anyone seen this
before?

Try uninstalling the Bytemobile compression software.  There should be
a menu choice in Cingular Connection Manager to uninstall the
Bytemobile software.  This Bytemobile software gave me problems in
downloading e-mail with Norton AV installed.  Cingular Connection
Manager should work fine without Bytemobile, it did for me.
