Is Cingular crippling Bluetooth capabilities on their Phones?

Hello.

Sorry to post here but I'm a Verizon customer.
I am planning of purchasing a new phone after
my contract expires with VZW in 5 months.  I'm
not sure if I will stay with Verizon because all
Bluetooth capable phones that they offer always
has the disclaimer beside the BT feature description:
"Only for certain profiles".  I think this is for
using the BT headset capabilities only.  They have
crippled being able to connect the phone with
Bluetooth to your PC to upload objects that you
have in your phone, or download something
from your PC, like maybe a picture you want
to make as your screen background on your
phone, etc....  AND I always use my phone to
connect to my laptop when I'm out and about
and I need to connect to work where I'm head
of the IT department.

Are Cingular Bluetooth (I like the RAZR) phones
crippled?

Is Cingular data connection expensive?  With
Verizon, I use my minutes when I connect
my laptop (or my Palm PDA) to my phone
to connect to the Verizon network so I
can securely VPN over to my work LAN.

Thanks in advance.

No OBEX works fine on Cingular phones.  I had
the same issue with Verizon.  You can copy anything
you like to a Cingular phone via Bluetooth.  However
they do cripple some Nokia phones (maybe others?)
by preventing you from using MP3s as ringtones.  In
order to get around that, you either have to convert the
files to a different format or flash the firmware to non
Cingular branded firmware.

My Cingular Motorola V551 seems to have full bluetooth capabilities.
Windows XP can transfer objects, including one "contact" at a time.  The
Mobile Phone Tools software package synchronizes the phonebook with the PC,
and offers more GUI on the transfer abilities.

The "minutes" connection on Cingular, CSD, isn't readily available for new
customers, although it does still exist.

The Cingular MEdiaNet plans range from $4.99 to 19.99
<https://www.cingular.com/media/media_net_purchase> The "legal" page at the
bottom suggests that you should not tether a computer using these plans.
The full Laptop Connect Unlimited plan is currently $60/month.

I have an Audiovox SMT5600 and it is brain dead.  All you can use the
bluetooth for is a headset.  You can't share data minutes with a laptop.
Pretty disappointing.

Maybe that's a function of the bluetooth adapter, since the drivers might
come with it.  I am using a DLink DBT-120 on Windows XP.  I had to remove
the Windows XP drivers that installed as soon as I plugged in the device
(even after loading the DLink CDROM first), and then I had a "modem" in my
Network Connections box under dialup.

Start-Control Panel- Phones and Modems, modems-diagnostics allows me to
"query" the modem, returning a bunch of status messages.

This adapter and the DLink drivers work fine for passing pictures, video,
java obex push, and internet access.  They will not allow my Motorola HS820
bluetooth headset to be used as a Windows audio device, though.

Did you try loading the Cingular Connection Manager?  That seems to have a
bunch of USB drivers with it.  I used that the get my v220 connected via
USB cable.  I don't know if it would install some Audiovox-specific piece
that you would need for tethering.

Hi Clarence,

You are correct.  You can use the SMT5600 as a modem.  The issues with that
are that you have to provide your own ISP and you get charged for minutes
while you are connected.  I know people who have a data plan on their phone
and can piggy back a PC on the same data plan to share the unlimited data
plans.  I have called tech support for Cingular and confirmed this.

The GSM data connection appears as a dialup modem in WindowsXP.
I cannot use my v551 as a true dialout modem.  That requires a CSD option
on the Cingular account, which I don't have.

When I "dial out" from Windows, I am actually making a data connection via
GPRS, and a Cingular MEdiaNet option on my account, not voice minutes.

The WindowsXP control panel modem diagnostics treat the v551 as a modem,
communicating with it via AT commands over bluetooth.

That's CSD, not GPRS.  The SMT5600 also supports GPRS (Class 10).

Yep, but that's GPRS, not CSD.  Different configuration required.

If you are looking to use your phone as a modem then download the
communication manager from

www.cingular.com/communicationmgr

Once you install the software you can use a bluetooth conncection or
data cable to tether through GPRS or EDGE.

To use it with MEdia Net, you need to configure it manually.  See the FAQ
below.
