No EDGE connection with Motorola V551

Hi,

I've a V551 with Medianet unlimited but never get an EDGE
connection to the internet. I'm in the middle of an EDGE coverage
area(Columbia SC).

I was hoping to get pointers on connection. My laptop is not
tethered by cable but I may buy one if that will fix the problem
(any pointers to a cheap source?). I use bluetooth to talk to the
V551. One laptop connection  is by a Zonenet dongle and the
other is built-in bluetooth on a new HP laptop. I used to connect
with Cingular connection manager but dropped that at John Navas
recommendation. Connection manager did not give me
EDGE either.  When connecting I dial '*99***1#' and use the logon
WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM.  Someone in another group suggested
the modem dial string of  AT+CGDCONT=1, "ip","wap.cingular" .
No difference either way.

I do get connected it's just not EDGE. I see mostly the icon for 'GPRS
PDP context active' or 'GPRS packet data available'. When transfering
data to or  from the net I get the 'insecure packet data transfer'
indicator. Signal strength is excellent with five bars. Under
network connections > dial up > connection > properties I use
standard modem over bluetooth with 460800 as my max speed.
Under Control Panel > Phone and Modem options >  Modems >
Standard modem over bluetooth > Properties > Modem > Max
speed is set to 112000 and that's the highest possible setting.

I'd appreciate some pointers on how to get diagnose this connection
and get EDGE working.

Thanks in advance!!

It sounds like you have a defective phone.  Take it to a store and
compare it next to another V551 to make sure you are in EDGE coverage.
You could try a new SIM but I don't think that will fix your issue
either.  I've seen a co-workers V551 with the same problem.  He sent it
back under warranty exchange and got a replacement that worked just
fine.

Early v551 don't display the "E" for EDGE, they only display the GRPS
indicator, even though they run EDGE speeds.

On my Cingular V551, Settings-Phone Status-Other Information you can
see the firmware version.  Mine is R472_G_08.18.16R_0A.

Do you have any idea of your download speed?

As far as I know, there is no way to confirm that you have an EDGE
connection.  Download a jpg file, and time it with a watch.  I just
downloaded 83211 bytes in 28 seconds in a non-EDGE area.  It said "too big
to display" at the end.  That's typical of the 30Kbps speed that I see for
GPRS.  In EDGE areas, I get the "E" icon, and that download would be
90Kbps.

Good to know.

Mine says R472_G_08.18.40R. I assume that means a later firmware
release date.

I am in the middle of a metro area with about 500k people. The EDGE
map at https://www.cingular.com/download/CING_Data_Services_Gen_V9.pdf
shows me in the middle of of an EDGE area. I downloaded a 70k file
and took about 27 seconds to complete (if you use firefox try the
fasterfox extenstion which automatically times page loads for you).

Can I not debug this by manually connecting to the bluetooth modem
port and sending a modem init strings screen to tell the phone to
EDGE? What would the codes be for the V551? Alternatively if the
phone is defective how can I prove to a Cingular saleman that the
phone is not EDGE'ing as it should?  And does a V551 to USB
cable provide better transfer speeds? If so where's a cheap location
to buy these?

TIA !

Firefox annoys me too much to fuss with it.

I thought you were using just the phone.  If you are tethered, then you can
use a variety of timing tests.  26K, sounds kind of non-EDGE to me.

That map shows me surrounded by EDGE, no GPRS showing anywhere, but I see
the "E" appear and disappear in different areas.

I'll drive around town today and look for an E. I don't believe
coverage is the issue. I spend most of the day within 1000
feet of the very center of a large metro area 30 by 30 miles
across. Perhaps Navas is around and can speak of this..he
seems to know the V551 well.

You should really spend an hour with firefox. You will not go
back to IE.

Any properly working EDGE-capable handset will automatically use EGPRS (EDGE)
in preference to GPRS when EGPRS is available.  There's nothing I know of that
will force a handset to select EGPRS or GPRS.  I second the suggestion to try
a different phone with your SIM; e.g., at a Cingular store.

Amen.  Especially with some of the excellent Extensions available.

I missed the Columbia, SC reference, and got distracted by your definitions
of a large metro area.  Yes, I would expect EDGE to be available in
Columbia, and if your firmware is new, it should display an E.  Also, your
speed says you are not playing EDGE.

I would visit the Cingular store on Clemson Road and see if one of the nice
salespeople has a phone that is currently EDGE connected.  (Back to the
downloading of a known size jpg.)  If their's is fast, and yours is slow...

I presume the Razr has the little "E", which is what all the folks in the
store seem to carry.

I have, and I have.  But you keep beta testing it, and when it changes
names again, I'll try it again.

Clemson road is quite a hike from downtown but I will go check it out
at a closer store.

I'm confused about the Firefox references.I have used it for over 2
years. My current deployment has 36 extensions installed in it and
I have no problems at all with spy or adware while almost all of my
friends have problems. The only thing I use IE for is Windows update
(there's a new extension for that too) or an occasional visit to
launch@yahoo.  I guess you have had a negative experience.

Thanks all for the responses!
