Do Moto V557's tend to freeze up?

Yesterday, I started to buy a Motorola V557 at Best
Buy in San Francisco, for a new Cingular account.
I got as far as the cash register when I noticed that
the phone was frozen, as follows:

- The external display illumination was stuck on,
and the time was stuck at 20 minutes ago (which
was when I had first turned it on).

- The keypad illumination was stuck on.

- The main screen was dark.

- The phone wouldn't respond to any keys and
could only be turned off by removing the battery.

So I went back to the cellular aisle and had them
switch me to another V557.  I cycled the power on
the new phone a few times, and on the third or fourth
cycle, the problem duplicated itself.  We tried a third
V557, and the same thing happened.  All three V557's
were manufactured in China on November 12 or 13,
2005. Those were the only three V557's that the SF
store had. At this point, it was after Best Buy's closing
time and they couldn't process a Cingular cancellation,
so I offered to take V557 #3 home and swap it today
at the Emeryville, California, Best Buy, hoping that
that store would have a different batch of V557's that
wouldn't have the same problem.

Today at the Emeryville store, they switched me
to a V557 manufactured in China in early January of
2006, two months after the date of manufacture for
the troublesome phones that I had tried in SF. And
we had the same problem on that phone. We thought
that maybe I had been given a defective SIM, so
they gave me a new SIM and we put that into yet
another V557. Unfortunately, same problem. A Best
Buy guy then called Cingular for help and was told
that the problem we were having was unknown to
Cingular.

I was only interested in the V557, so at that point I
decided to just cancel my account and get an
equipment refund from Best Buy. Cingular
agreed to refund my $35 activation fee.

I already have a Motorola V551 (very similar to
the V557) which works beautifully.

Does any of you have a quess about why I found
this glitch on various V557's?

Is there any mention of this issue on Usenet or
on any web site? (I haven't found any so far.)

The email address under which I posted can't
receive mail.  You can email me at:

...but I'd prefer that any replies be posted to this
thread on alt.cellular.cingular.

I'm the original poster. If you're a Motorola or Cingular
technician or engineer who thinks that I might have
stumbled onto an undocumented V557 glitch, I
would probably consent to help you try to dupli-
cate the problem, either by phone, by email, or
in person [if you're in the Bay Area]. You could
email me at:

I've had my V557 since Jan 4th 2006 and have never had the problem yo
are having. In fact have never had the phone lock up at all. Were an
of the phones fully charged when you had the problem?

Had at the time the "Ticker screen" been fully updated once the phon
was activated? (not sure it would cause the problem though).

Do you have the firmware version of the phone to compare it to the one
at the store?

I know there was a problem with a batch of SIM cards, but that was fro
what I have read on the Net and a few Cell Forums, and would guess tha
that batch of cards have been swapped out by now, but antyhing i
possible

I bought a Motorola V540 on e-bay, which is basically the same phone
without a camera.  I've had the phone about 3 weeks.  It locked up once
exactly like you describe.  No problems in the last several days.

My 557 locked up.  The problem was solved by replacing the bad SIM card.  No
problems after that.

I'm the original poster. I was so intent on having a V557
that yesterday I went to a third Best Buy to see if I
could find a workaround for the problem that I described
originally. I was able to duplicate the problem on yet
another V557, with a totally new SIM. The problem
only seems to arise when I cycle the power repeatedly
within a short period of time, which of course I wouldn't do
in the course of normal use. So I bought the phone.  I
doubt that the problem will bother me any further.

So what is it exactly that you did to the phone to cause a problem?
Only slow down I have even noticed is when turning the ticker on an
off, the phone pauses for a few seconds.  Even got my PUK code (ahea
of time of course), just to see how easy it was to lock it up enterin
the wrong security codes after changing them from their defaults. Onl
did this after reading how  often posters seem to lock themselves ou
of their phones or SIM.  But then thinking back, out of all the phone
I have owned, I've yet to get locked out of one, fiddling, playing o
hacking them. So I'm either lucky or just carefull in what I'm doing
suppose, who knows?

BTW the PIN1 and the PIN2  codes on the V557, are the PUK codes, whic
you get from your carrier, and can if you like change to make them th
same.

Just call up Cingular's customer service and tell them you'd like th
PUK codes for your phone, so that in the event that you do lock it up
you'll have them handy along with all the other info and ID numbers o
your phone
