Unless you want a base phone with some nice feataures but very many
limitations, skip this phone.

Pros: speakerphone, speed dial, MP3 ringtones, excellent battery life,
external display, fairly simple controls, side button to mute ringer, small
footprint.

Cons: Cingular doesnt support data cable for sync with PC, Only Samsung sell
this data cable which is $80. plus S& H, phone not compatible with most
online software, side button can accidentally be hit which will turn off
vibration mode and mute phone resulting in missed calls, 2 buttons must be
pressed AFTER call is answered to activate speakerphone which is awkward,
hardly any accessories available, only Samsung brand or compatible headsets
explicitly made for this phone will work, bad reception, dropped calls,
organizer is wimpy, only holds 25 entries per category (without a data cable
you can ony enter things manually, which sux especially if you need the
calander features).

my 2 cents: spend the extra money and get a motorola.

And which Motorola would you recommend?

As far as data cables I have them for each phone made,  through
Datapilot,  this way my sons Nokia,  and samsung d357 is fully
supported.  I was thinking of the X497 as a spare backup phone.

Thanks for you opinion.

my boyfriend and my mother both have this phone, and both of them hate
it. He upgraded with cingular from an old nokia to the samsung, and
wishes he had kept the nokia (even thought the keys dont work anymore!)
Both of them have complained that it takes way to many steps to get to
something simple (contacts, text msg. ext..) and my boyfriend
CONSTANTLY presses the side button which turns off the ringer/vibrate
mode.. i cant tell you how many times hes gotten his butt reamed for
that (hes a marine, not having a phone thats reliable is REALLY bad) my
mother has said that its hard for her to hit the buttons because they
are so small (shes 55) and that it isnt very user friendly (used to
have an LG from verizon). in my oppinion save your money and buy a
moto.. i just bought the v551 off ebay. i like it :D
