Does anyone know if Cingular is in the process of making the billing
name available on calls to land line phones?  Local calls from Cingular
phones in my area (Frankfort, KY) are now displaying this way, but
calls from out of the 502 area code are showing the number with an
"Unknown Name" tag.  Anybody know what's going on?
Thanks.

If this is like most other similar situations, the hangup
is that your local wireline telco hasn't made an agreement
to pay Cingular the money...

Explanation: The _number_ in caller id is sent "forward"
with the call setup. THe _name_, though, requires a
backwards data-base lookup by the recipient telco.

The people who own the database, in this case Cingular,
want to be paid for the lookup.

So... you're paying your wireline telco for this service,
and they're pocketing the cash.

Meanig... that they (the wirline) telco is the one to
complain to, both in letters to them and to your state's PSC.

Thanks for the information, but since my local wireline telco is
BellSouth (who owns 40%) of Cingular, why wouldn't they work this out
between themselves?

It's an arm's length relationship.

That could be one of the several explanations whats going on as there
are so many variables in the mix and I don't have enough experience
using Cingular in all the telco areas.

By your above logic, in the PAST Southwestern Bell Mobile users (now
Cingular users) in the Dallas, TX area placing calls to a Southwestern
Bell Telephone telco landline Dallas number and Dallas telco callers to
a SWB Mobile user should be able to view all the possible information as
the carrier and telco were one in the same. If Cingular distanced
themselves from the incumbent telco, then it may or may not still be
possible. I don't know. I have no idea what happened if a call was
placed to or from a Plano, TX number where the incumbent telco was GTE
(now Verizon).

But I do know that if you request Cingular not to display your billing
number (and name?), then it your cellular call will show up as a
"Wireless Call" to the called party. This information was from Cingualr CS.

Up here, the incumbent telco is Sprint AND Sprint cellular has the
ability to give your number custom information, i.e. I asked Sprint to
display my company's name instead of my billing name. When I called a
local Sprint telco number OR a Dallas Cingular or Dallas SBC number
(formerly Southwestern Bell telco), it would display my business name also.

Currently, I have Cingular and when I call a Sprint landline number or a
Dallas SBC number, it only shows "Wireless Call"
