Treo deal?

I've been with Cingular about 18 months now. That's with a 2 year contract
that was my first with them. I have a total of 3 lines on the account, so I
pay Cingular about $105 a month.

I think I'd really like to move to a Treo and I'm wondering if Cingular
might offer any kind of "deal" when I get to the end of my 2 year
committment. Anyone have any experiences with that?

I should be an "ideal" Cingular customer. No late payments, and an abundance
of rollover minutes banked.

Thanks for that.  I'm aware of that info.  The primary reason for my post is
I'm wondering if anyone has successfully negotiated a better deal than the
standard one. I definitely should have been a bit more clear about that.

To get a better deal you need to get transferred to "retention" -- standard
reps don't have the authority.

There is NO better deal, and there is NO RETENTION DEPARTMENT,  been
there done that, if the deal/plan is NOT listed on the web site there
not going to do it.  And if they do you better document this and
document it good.

BUT THERE IS NOT RETENTION DEPARTMENT

There is in fact a "retention" group -- see the FAQ for details.

BUZZZZZZZZ!!!! WRONG!!!  I've posted previously on how
5 or 6 months ago retention paid me (in a credit to my Cingular bill
that more than offset the $$$ I paid for the phones) to take a 6230
and a RAZR even though I was still under contract.  Retention has
HUGE latitude compared to the regular CSR people.

There most certainly is. However you can't just ask to be transferred there.

Actually you can.

Actually you can with the caveat that the CSR seems to be trained
to not transfer you unless you are very insistant.

Indeed it does pay to be (politely) persistent, in other contexts as well.  My
own practice is the Rule of Threes, to ask (politely) at least three times
when I haven't yet gotten a good answer, calling back each time to get a
different person.  It's proven to be very effective.

BTW have you considered an HP 6515 instead?

I'd recommend thinking long and hard and do a lot of research before
plunking down your hard earned money for a Cingular Treo 650.

FWIW, I ordered a Treo 650 sometime around a year ago.

Although the device, in theory, is great, I found it to be unreliable.
It would spontaneously reboot several times a day, many times in the
middle of a phone call.  I looked online and found legion of people
with the same problem and returned it.

Perhaps they've improved things (e.g., firmware), but, to me, a phone
that reboots or locks up more often than once every one or two weeks
is completely unacceptable.

(As it is right now, my Nokia 6620 will go for weeks without a
problem.  And the only problem has been it "running out of memory"
because "too many apps are open" when I try and surf the Net after
it's been on for weeks.  At that point, I reboot *at my convenience*
and it works flawless for another few weeks.)

The 6620 is a great phone, and was my primary phone unti I bought
the 6515.  I do love the 6620 enough though that I'm debating on
whether to ebay it or keep it.

I love it too.

It is significantly improved over the 3600 which I had prior to that
and really liked.  The main improvements were the size (smaller),
16-bit color screen (6620) vs the 4096 color screen (3600) and the
joystick (6620) versus the touchpad (3600).

I especially hated the touch pad of the 3600 which was always
difficult for me to use accurately.  It seemed 25% of the time I would
push it one way and it would register a different direction than I
intended.  I don't think it was defective, it was just not designed
well.  I can't believe how much better the joystick is than a
touchpad.

The above reason is why I haven't upgraded to a 6682 yet.  If the 6682
had a joystick, I would have jumped on it already.  Other people have
voiced the same complaint and I can't believe they went back to a
touchpad.  I guess most people prefer them, but that seems totally
unbelieveable to me.

I debated on the 6682, Cingular offered me a pretty killer deal on it a
while back, but after reading all the howardforum reviews, it simply
didn't seem like it was an upgrade to me.  It was slightly faster, but
had less memory and couldn't do anything the 6620 didn't already do
(and the initial firmware was buggy as hell).  I was ready to kill for one
before it was released, but afterwards, I'm glad I let someone else be
the early adopter.

Have you done anything to fix the problem?

Firmware has been upgraded at least twice.  And there are known
problems with specific third party softwares, either by themselves or
in combinations.

Four things I've done to make my Treo work right:

* Don't use Butler
* Don't use ZLauncher
* Update the firmware (current for Cingular is 1.17-CNG)
* Shim the SIM card with a piece of paper

I have a Cingular 650 and I love it. Like any cell phone it occasionally
drops calls, but it can do more than any "plain" cell phone out there. II
does reset itself every two to three months but I never turn it off. The
newest firmware it almost perfect othet than a screen turn offf issure after
using a Bluetooth headset, but other than that I am very please and would
not even consider a WM5 device. In regards to it versus a WM5 device, I have
seen both and IMHO the Palm OS is better than WM5 but to each his/her own.
it also helps that I have had a Palm device since the original PalmPilot
Personal.
