A friend says he has a Cingular 815 which has XM readio. I say BS. Anyone
know of what he speaks?
Do you mean the 8125? If it's a windows mobile device, you can use services
like http://www.minixm.com/DS/ to stream xm radio on it. Most likely what
he's talking about.

That feature, while "free", does not provide the handset with the
capability of directly receiving a satellite signal on it's own. It
simply provides the handset the capability to use the internet
wirelessly to access the program material. I don't think that type of
cellular usage is free.

the OP didn't claim the guy with the phone said it was free. the
guy could very well pay for an unlimited data package. i've
been meaning to look into this for my PPC which has unlimited
data.

If you have a WIFI connection, the client s/w and A PAID SUBSCRIPTION
TO XM or SIRIUS, then you can do this. But WHY? <G>
If you're saying you want to do this over GPRS/EDGE whatever, then
you're paying for a subscription AND substantial carrier time.
Better to get an actual XM unit if you need to hear Howard Stern that
badly <G>...

Unfortunately, that wouldn't help you since Howard Stern is on Sirius.

Mea culpa. I knew better and typed it anyways...
Howard's great and all, but not worth a subscription IMHO. I'm sure
he's not going to miss me though as he laughs to the bank...<G>

Just got shoutcast streaming to my phone working, this is pretty cool.
As long as it's a low bandwidth station (MP3 64K or under) it works
perfectly over EDGE. Not sure how high I can go but 192K breaks
up constantly. I'll have to play around.

I tried this with Sirius - unfortunately the music selection window
remains blank on my new 8125. Any ideas on what might be needed to
get that?
Thanks,
Fred

I'm not familiar with using the Sirius online page, but you might
try a different broweser such as NetFront or Opera.

Thanks for the tip- I tried both of these and received error messages
that the browser was the wrong version. Saw netforce as an early
version of netscape and Opera as Mozilla - said neither were supported.
This is just an FYI as I suspect that the browsers may not support
streaming audio. It was a great tip though because I have been testing
a few corp web sites and IE didn't render a portal we are using. Opera
renders it perfectly so thanks!

If you are an XM subscriber, you can stream MOST of the XM channels
to your PC (or other similiarly capable device) at no additional
charge. Obviously this would require a reasonably high bandwidth
channel and a hopefullly unlimited data connection if using a phone.

I believe xm streams their online channels using Windows Media Audio 9.1 64
kbps, 48 kHz, stereo 1-pass CBR for the high quality and Windows Media Audio
9.1 32 kbps, 22 kHz, stereo 1-pass CBR for low quality.
My wife and daughter scoped it today. It's an 8125. 815...What an idiot.

Sure, with an unlimited data plan, you can stream all day for the
single ($59.99?) monthly price.
It doesn't actually receive XM radio, but XM streams through the
internet if you have a subscription.
So it's bucks for the data, and bucks for the subscription.
Me, I'll take an RSS feed of PBS over XM. Personal choice. Cheaper.

You can do it with the unlimited mmode plan for $19.99 as well.

Hm. That sounds affordable. Would the 8125 do this for a large fraction
of the day, and when will Cingular have service in the Washington, D.C.
Metro tunnels?

Note that "unlimited mmode" is only available to current "blue" (old ATTWS)
subscribers. The comparable "orange" package is called "MEdia Net Unlimited".
