I have a V557 paired with my laptop via Bluetooth and would like to be able
to access the internet this way for travel but can't get it to work.  I have
a data package so it's up to me now to get this working.  The pairing works
fine and I can send files back and forth.  How do I make the internet link?

Step by step for a novice.

Thanks

I'm trying to do this and still having trouble getting connected.  I'm using
the Cingular Communications Mgr which may not be the right way to go for
this.  When I start it up it finds my bluetooth connection to my phone
alright.  I then click on Connect and wait.  It goes through the
initialization process ok, searches for network and finds it and then show
Ready: 'Cingular - Accelerated'  I then click on the highlighted Connect
button.  It says connecting, authenticating, authorizing and then I get an
error "RAS Error, Return Value: 31.  Click ok and get Error with PPP
Connection: 31.  It then reverts to Ready and waits for me to connect.

What am I doing wrong here?  Is it easier to use a standard windows config
and bypass the Cing. Comm. Mgr.?

Thanks for the help!

Do you have a Data Connect package or a MEdia Net package?  If the former, why
not just take it in to a real Cingular store and get them to do it?  If the
latter, then you need to do it yourself manually, as described in the FAQ.

I have a Media Net package.  This is more of a challenge than a necessity as
I will probably use it only in a traveling emergency.  Other than that it's
a novelty to have available.

I did get it working however through my Bluetooth using Blue Soleil to
create a DUN connection.  It actually works pretty well, connecting in about
2 seconds.  I used it to load a web page or two and access webmail and it
worked fine.  I don't have a test speed using DSL Reports but it was showing
111.5 when it connected.  This may be a connect speed and not an actual
throughput speed but it did work and was faster than dial-up so I'm
satisfied.

I have not tried the Cingular Connection Mgr software to compare ease and
speed.

This is probably the (serial) port speed.  You should increase the port speed
setting to at least twice that for optimum performance.

That is essentially what I am doing.  I have the MediaNet Unlimited, rather
than one of the smaller packages, because the pay-as-you-go rates are so
exorbitant, and one day of heavy usage can exceed several months of
payment on the unlimited plan.

I have considered turning the unlimited on only if I am going out of town,
but that seems too troublesome.

http://www.google.com/glm mapping can use .5 MB per session.
http://m.gmail.com renders Microsoft documents in email.  That could be
extensive data downloads.
http://www.opera.com/mini might also be a lot of data.

If you tether a PC, that could be several MB in one day.

dslreports might go over your usage limit for the month ;-)
Timing the download of one jpg of known size is probably sufficient for
getting an idea of the speed.  I find about 30Kbps in non-EDGE areas, and
70-100Kbps in EDGE areas, with a V551.

115200 is a serial connection speed limit, not this connection.
You should set it for 230400.  For my WinXP-Sp2 Bluetooth, it's under
network connections, dialup connections, BluetoothConnection, properties,
General-modem-configure.

You could observe throughput with a start-run-perfmon.msc.
My connection shows up under +Network Interface,WAN [PPP_SLIP].
There you can monitor sent and received bytes, and some errors.

Testing just now, in a poor reception area, I saw a peak of 6422Bps loading
nytimes.com.  There was a peak upload of 3885Bps during that session.  The
peaks are very peaky, so I suspect that they are data from PC to phone, and
the peaks are smoothing out in the phone onto the WAN.

It took 1:26 to download a jpg of 193K, 2399Bps, with some noticeable flat
spots in the performance monitor.

Once you have the connection set up, connection manager is of no value to
you.  It will also want to connect to the ISP@ login, which is part of the
Data Connect package that you don't have, so that won't work.
