Ok, we all know about the *228#1 trick on verizon phones that updates
tower/cell/network info on their handsets.

Is there any similar trick for Cingular phones, in particular the HP
6315 and SX66?

thanks

Call Cingular and ask them to push the settings, then reboot the phone.

Last summer, I had a problem with my phone going into "SOS Only" mode.
Called Cingular and the tech rep told me to turn off the phone so he
could push the current cell tower network data to my phone, and then
restart the phone.

Apparently, the Cingular phones check for these updated when they power
on.

The push did not resolve the problem, though.  Shimming the SIM card
did.

'shimming the SIM card'???

It's a minor chronic problem on my model phone.  The SIM card is in a
tray that doesn't hold the card tight enough against the contacts.
Shimming the card with a piece of paperboard behind the card fixes it.

Are you sure it isn't the SIM card itself? Do you own an early Cingular
64K ENS SIM card marked "GEMPLUS"? There is a recall on those cards for
exactly this type of behavior.

Nope, my card does not say "GEMPLUS" anywhere on it.  The only name I
can find on the card is Cingular.  The rest is the size and what looks
like a serial number.

>exactly this type of behavior.

I received no recall on the card.  I did get a new tray, unasked, but
that failed to resolve the problem, but shimming the card does.  Now I
only get the SOS only mode when I really do have really crappy
reception, like in my dentist's office.

Tips for the Innocent Bystander:  24. If you are spending the night in
a spooky old house on a dare, don't sneak away to another part of the
house for romantic interludes with your Significant Other. Wait until
you can get a nice, clean, safe motel room.
