Again, I suspect incorrect settings.

All that I've needed was to log in once after having set it up with a computer
on the Web. Regardless, there's nothing essential on the Cingular WAP server
-- useful services can easily be accessed directly. See the FAQ below for
some of the more useful WAP resources..

No offense intended, but I seriously doubt that, because there are too many
old phones still in use, and because I've had a great deal of success using
unbranded and unlocked GSM phones (e.g., Sony Ericsson Z600) on Cingular
MEdia.

I don't doubt your experience. The difference in behavior may depend on
the firmware of the phone itself, and how that brand handles secure web
pages for which it does not have a resident certificate of authority.
Just for fun, I loaded the Cingular WAP settings into an old unbranded
Nokia 6590i today. Upon trying to load the home page, the phone issues
an error: "Unknown Authority" - and asks if I will accept the certificate.
If I accept, the MediaNet home page eventually loads, but the temporary
certificate is not stored, and the same error is generated next time.

It's possible something has changed, but why bother with MEdia Net home page
at all? You should be able to access whatever you want, other than Cingular
email, directly. For email I use and recommend free Google Mail (Gmail),
which has a slick WAP interface, and can also be accessed directly with the
email clients in many phones.
