Am I right in imaginging that MMS is a sort of combination of SMS and
Internet messaging -- that is, a notification like an SMS message arrives to
indicate that there's a message, and then the Internet is used to retrieve
it?

No.  In the GSM world, MMS messaging is a substantial enhancement to SMS
messaging.

OK.  I have an ex-T-Mobile unlocked phone that I'm using on Cingular.  Voice
and SMS work.  MMS and anything involving Internet access do not work.  With
MMS, I get notification of the message but can't retrieve the content.
That's why I thought it required Internet access, which is blocked because I
have T-Mobile's firmware on Cingular's network.

Should MMS be working?

It will only work if the phone is configured with the correct settings.  See
the FAQ below.

Right, and with T-Mobile's firmware, there seems to be no way for me to make
the settings.  Some menu items that are present in Cingular's firmware (for
the x497 and x427) are absent from my x495.

Thanks for maintaining the FAQ, by the way.  It's a very useful document.

your x495 needs to be reflashed to get these features unlocked to use mms
for cingular.

its pretty easy if you have the correct equipment.. go to a mall and ask if
there is someone local that does this.
