Count the entire Atlanta metro area as well. They told me it's not just GSM
and it's apparently the entire system.
I have a week-old phone and was pissed because I couldn't get service this
AM and while I was out happened by a Cingular store and stopped in and was
told this. Her exact words were "major outtage".
Lame . . . lame . . . lame.
I just switched to GSM and she said this is the first time this has
happened. Is she lying?

I'm in Nashville as well....still no luck. I spoke with a rep (after
20 minutes on hold) that said the only thing to do was to cut the
phone off and back on every so often and see if it has been fixed.
Talk about unhelpful. You'd think they'd put some update on their
website or something but I can't find anything about it.

Well, we're up and down here in Nashville. My phone can receive
calls, but I can't make them. My wife's cell phone (same model) can't
send or receive. Go figure.

Well, that's why you need a GAIT phone. When GSM goes down here in
Detroit my Nokia 6340i justs pick up Cingular TDMA or ATTWS GSM or TDMA
, or T-Mobile GSM.

Down in St. Louis as well since 09/26 PM they have no idea as to when it
will be backup. GSM has been a joke for the last 24 hours. My Nextel is
working just fine however...isn't that amazing!!!!.

Hmmmmm...
The way people describe it, it sounds like
the GSM account servers are off line.
The network can't verify that you are a registered user.
The other phones have no problem which means
they are on different servers.
If the account servers for the gsm customers are near you.
The power outage may have been caused by a power
interruption the buildings that they are located in.
And the power surge got past the UPS equipment.
Or the power lines may have shorted to the telecommunications
lines and the voltage running back to the servers via
the telecommunications lines fried them.
And the GSM customers will slowly get back service in small bits
as they enter the customer information into new servers that they
are getting on line.
I haven't seen any disruption on a tdma or amps phones here
in Indiana.

No GSM service for several hours this morning on the NE side of
Indianapolis, IN. No signal on either of our two GSM handsets. Service was
available as we drove to Noblesville, IN but was still down when we returned
to the home area. No RF signal at all. Power cycling the handset brought
it back to life about 30 minutes after we had returned from Noblesville to
Indianapolis. Incoming and outgoing service was OK in Noblesville. Not
sure who was carrying the GSM service in that area though.
