JJ_BPK - 26 May 2006 15:15 GMT Morning,, a round of sarsaparilla for the regulars,, on my plastic Wilma...
Last year I got some help here picking up a used phone for my trips to the UK & EU,, found a cheep Erricson T68i on eBay and picked up a pre-paid SIM card.. worked great..
Now I want to look for a new phone..
We current use two(misses&me) Nokia 6340I via Cingular.. They are 5 yo and although we get good reception here in the Conch Republic and in DC(G-kids), I want to get something with the following traits.
1)large text entry,, eyes are getting old,, 2)large screen,, 3)small, under 100gr 4)sd card slot(full size??),, would like to move pics from my camera to the phone to transmit via email?? 5)all the other new toys,, but I'm not sure why, I do want to play with ring-tones.. 6)quad freq,, I want to be able to swap SIM's while in the UK, OZ, or where ever.. 7)I am leaning toward something the does not 'flip' or 'slide',, like the R7,,, but will listen to reason.. 8)hardy,, phone frequently in pocket or back-pack getting bumped.. 9)strong battery,, while traveling we sometimes don't get to re-charge for a couple days. 10)good reception,, I use my phone on the skiff,, my 6340I is good for about 15 miles off shore..
I have always had good luck with Nokia,, and have looked at the N series,, but again,, open to suggestions..
I am willing to wait for a new model coming out, if there is a must have feature.. My plan is to hunt and be prepared to buy in Fall time frame. We are off contract with Cingular so my 1st try will be via their phone up-grade process..
Thanks in advance Jim An Old Parrot Head, In The Conch Republic, Just South of Reality
JJ_BPK - 26 May 2006 16:02 GMT Oh,, I was just reading about GPS and a mapquest freebee app that does mapping on your phone. I know that they are not the same,, but what do you look for,, is the mapquest app,, an MP3 file??

[quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > In The Conch Republic, > Just South of Reality If you want a quadband with GPS built in and SD, you're pretty much limited to the HP 6515 PocketPC right now. The forthcoming 6915 is another option but it's miniSD. It's not bad for reception, but it's not a Nokia. I live on an island and most phones will not work here, the best phones I've had for reception are the Nokia 6230, 6620 and the Motorola RAZR. The HP 6515 does work (I was surprised) but not as well as the others. You could consider something like the Nokia 6682 and purchase a bluetooth GPS. I think that would meet your requirements.
Fred - 27 May 2006 03:34 GMT Nothing has it all but look into:
Cingular 2125 and Molorola V3i (note the "i")

I have taken my list and tossed a couple requirements,, and have read a bit on others..
1)large text entry,, eyes are getting old,, 2)large screen,,
without going into the PDA area,, looks like the V3i is at the top of most reviews at 2.2 ",, and the Nokia N73 is 2.4" but not available..
3)small, under 100gr
both are close enough
4)sd card slot(full size??),, would like to move pics from my camera to the phone to transmit via email??
sd slot fell off the list,, looks like if the phone doesn't support wifi,, any lg file is a slow process,, I shoot at full size on my SD500..
5)all the other new toys,, but I'm not sure why, I do want to play with ring-tones..
Nothing of interest, I will continue to carry my TP on long trips for back-up, display, email,,,,
6)quad freq,, I want to be able to swap SIM's while in the UK, OZ, or where ever..
both support quad
7)I am leaning toward something the does not 'flip' or 'slide',, like the R7,,, but will listen to reason..
Dropped in favor of large screen priority..
8)hardy,, phone frequently in pocket or back-pack getting bumped..
will probably look at warranty insur, although of the 6 or 7 phones we have had in the last 20 years,, none ever failed..
9)strong battery,, while traveling we sometimes don't get to re-charge for a couple days.
both about the same
10)good reception,, I use my phone on the skiff,, my 6340I is good for about 15 miles off shore..
I'm thinking my little 6340I and TDMA might be why I get good reception off shore???
Now, does anyone have the N73,, Know when the N73 will be on the Cingular site?? Want to offer other alternatives?? V5 or L9 or ...
Will there be other V3i, L7, N73 like Cingular branded model??
Who makes the Cingular 2125?
Thanks JJ An Old Parrot Head, In The Conch Republic, Just South of Reality
