MediaNet & MediaWorks limited to GPRS speed?

I've seen statements to the effect that the wap.cingulargprs... server
is limited to GPRS speeds.

I use MediaWorks throughout the southeast and have never seen speeds
greater than 73kbps with my V551. Others have said they get 300+kbps.
Is this because they use the isp... server?

If so, maybe I'll switch to a data plan.

No.

70KbpS is beyond Cingular GPRS, into medium EDGE speeds.
300Kbps isn't possible on EDGE.  The maximum is about 150kbps.

That won't change a thing.  There is no speed difference.
I get about 30kbps with a v551 in a GPRS area, about 90-100kbps in EDGE
areas.  Others report about 150 with a PC card, but not with a v551.

Thanks for the precise answer.

It's not.  It will even go up to UMTS speed with a 3G SIM.

The V551 (Class 4) is capable of speeds up to about 100 Kbps, so that's
a bit low.  Other EGPRS(EDGE) devices (Class 10) can go up to about 170
Kbps.

They may be seeing the result of "data acceleration" (data compression),
which is only available on ISP.

>If so, maybe I'll switch to a data plan.

The primary benefits would be:
1. Data acceleration
2. VPN

Certain types of VPN will not work over MEdia Net, only Data Connect.
