EDGE, PC Card and Cingular Proxy

Anyone know how to utilize Cingular's proxy server with a PC card/EDGE
network? I know how to connect to WAP (WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM), and I can
set the proxy in my browser to use proxy:wireless.cingular.com, port
80. But, when I connect to a website, like Google, the browser wants to
download a file type of wml. Other sites just display garbage on the
screen.

The reason I want to try this is because I get around 140-160 kbps on
my PC card, but 180-200 kbps on my phone. The phone utilizes the proxy.
The PC card is using ISP@CINGULARGPRS.COM.

Thanks

That because it's a WML/WAP proxy, which only works with a WAP browser
(e.g., Microsoft Mobile Explorer 3.0).

The proxy shouldn't have any real bearing on network speed.  What it
does is reduce the amount of data traffic.

The Google WAP proxy is an alternative that works better with regular
browsers.

That would be faster with ISPDA@CINGULARGPRS.COM -- see Data
Acceleration in the FAQ below.

I've never noticed much of a difference when using ISPDA. You have any
statistics from your experience?

Cingular's Data Acceleration (DA) uses compression to improve the
throughput of web (HTTP) and email (POP3, IMAP) downlink traffic. The
primary benefit seems to come from greatly compressing graphics; the
visual result is significantly degraded, but still quite usable, and
the performane boost is substantial, on the order of 2x for typical
graphics-heavy web pages. In addition, compressible email attachments
larger than 8K bytes are compressed into .CAB files, which raise some
possible issues (e.g., with anti-virus scanning), but I personally
haven't found it to be a problem. Overall, DA works well enough that
I normally use it rather than a raw connection.

I don't see any difference at all in speed or in graphic resolution.
I'm using a Dial-up Network Connection and connecting to ISPDA. I've
also used the Sierra Watcher. Any other settings which need to happen?

DA works on GPRS/EGPRS(EDGE), not CSD.

Correct. I'm not using CSD. It's a XP Dial-up connection using the
Sierra card as a modem, connecting to EDGE. Same performance as using
Watcher or Communications Manager.

The applicable settings are all in the FAQ below.
