Porting Number Between Prepaid Services

Can I port my existing Locus Callplus prepaid phone number to one of
the Cingular Go Phone prepaid plans (probably the $0.25/minute no
daily charge plan)?

If so, do I do it at the time of Go Phone activation, and are there
magic words I need to say, or a special path through the voice prompts
to use?

Locus Callplus uses the Cingular TDMA network, and is shutting down at
the end of March, so I have to move to a new cell service. I use about
50 minutes/month of time and want to minimize the total cost, so none
of the monthly plans works.  The $100 Go Phone card with 1 year
expiration looks very attractive for cost, and also for the fact I
have problems with the prepaid plans that require renewing every 30
days for low total cost.  Unfortunately, T-Mobile coverage is a little
spotty in my area, so Cingular seems like the best choice.

Thanks for any help or advice

Check Page Plus. I switched my TDMA prepaid accounts for my kids to
them. It's a renewal every 120 days. It's much better coverage than
Cingular, since it's on Verizon's network, and roaming is permitted.
Also AMPS use is permitted. It's also cheaper than GoPhone.

One thing I like about the Go Phone's now.... They have a plan that
allows for free mobile-to-mobile, which works great for family's
wanting to communicate with each other.

Yes, if you're going to be using a lot of minutes calling other Cingular
customers, then the GoPhone can make sense.

If you're just looking for a low-usage plan with low monthly minimums,
there are better options.

Cingular now has arguably the best digital coverage of any carrier.
That said, different carriers have different coverage in different areas
-- there is no one best carrier -- so you should check to see how actual
coverage compares in areas you care about.  In areas I care about here
in the San Francisco Bay Area, Cingular is significantly better than any
other carrier.

Don't let Cingular slant you towards Go Phone. They rip you out of a about a
third of their GSM network. Look at the covergae map of contract GSM and VS
pre paid GSM. You will be amazed at what they chop you out of. I am also on
Free to Go. I end up in rural areas if not just in Wyoming or Montana once
in a while. Pre paid has 0no GSM coverage up there. Nothing. The old TDMA
had coverage anywhere. I have to check on this Check Page deal people are
talking about. If not it's off to Verizon for me.

It's not just TDMA versus GSM, it's TDMA+AMPS versus GSM.

Page Plus is the closest you can get for wide coverage in prepaid.

PagePlus uses Verizon's network, and is much cheaper than Verizon's own
prepaid InPulse service.

Their web site is not very good, but at least you can purchase time
online, unlike 7-11's SpeakOut service.

PagePlus information not on their web site:

-You must add more time every 120 days.

-Unused time rolls over when you buy more.

-There is no $80/800 minute card available, even though it's on their
web site.

-You can activate any old Verizon phone, even non-E911 capable.

-You buy activation kits on eBay for about $5, which includes 100
minutes. Search for "Page Plus Cellular."

You're certainly right about the Page Plus web site being poor.
Thanks for supplying the additional info, which otherwise only seems
to be available from their reseller's sites.

Despite the poor web site, the actual phone service is excellent. I get
the feeling that it's a very low-budget operation operating on very thin
margins. I'd be surprised if there were more than three or four employees.

Thanks very much for this info.  I hadn't realized the coverage maps
were different.

I appreciate the various advice people have offered about what service
to move to and will look into that, but no one has addressed my basic
question about porting my existing CallPlus TDMA number to another
prepaid plan.

Can anyone help with the number porting question?

Thanks
 P

P.S. The area I'm interested in service for is Orange County, CA,
particularly Irvine and Mission Viejo and neighboring cities.

I know that T-Mobile will port numbers from non-T-Mobile postpaid
accounts to T-Mobile prepaid accounts, at a store. I would think that
they can do it from prepaid as well, but your best bet is to go to a
store and ask, rather than call them. That is if T-Mobile prepaid meets
your needs in other ways. I saw a posting that T-Mobile ported from
PagePlus to T-Mobile prepaid, so it should be possible from CallPlus too.

I doubt if PagePlus will port, unless you can find a brick and mortar
reseller of PagePlus (these do exist) that knows how to do porting.

Yes, they will port your old Call Plus number to Page Plus. I got a
Page Plus activator guy on Ebay to do it for me (I asked before I
bought, and he told me what info he would need; seller name is
laserstore12.)
