Mobile phone company Motorola surprised markets by saying it would
post a loss in the first three months of this year and that lowered
 its revenue targets.

It blamed poor handset sales and a tough pricing environment, adding
that earnings for the whole of 2007 would be much lower than first
 forecast.

The firm, which has been under pressure for a number of quarters,
said its chief financial officer was leaving.

Motorola added it would also speed up a share buy-back plan to
 bolster prices.

"They're losing a ton of money in phones," said Edward Snyder, an
 analyst at Charter Equity Research.

"They need to release a set of new phones designed for lower prices,
they need to design lower priced phones that are designed to be
profitable at a much lower price. And that's going to take about a
 year and half," he said.

They will bounce back, they always do and besides they made (and still
do) so much money off of the RAZR that is is pathetic. I do agree that
other companies are surpassing them in functionality of phones. Their
user interface sucks and they Java applications are slow. Beef them up
and lets get the ball rolling.....Come on MOTO!!!

Cheers!

I personally find the RAZR V3xx to be snappy and well engineered.

Agreed.

I do have a question about the V3xx, though.

I used to have a black RAZR v3. I could activate the speakerphone while on a
call, close the phone, and continue the conversation. When I activate the
speakerphone and close the V3xx, it hangs up. I've checked the manual, and
the menus. I cannot find anything to allow me to close the phone and
continue the conversation. Is there such an option, and where would it be?

Thanks,
Barry

There's a modding hack to keep the speaker(phone) on with the phone
closed, but the mic is still turned off, since it's not exposed when the
phone is closed.

Maybe they'll buy Palm!

The problem with the "bounce back, always do" argument is that:

* Moto cellular went into the tank once before, pissing away a dominant
market share, and only clawed its way back with the skunk works RAZR
(arguably just an updated Startac).

* Moto didn't learn its lesson, and went back to its old losing ways.

* The market is now near saturated and even more competitive, and it
will be even harder for Moto to turn itself around again.

* Much of the remaining market opportunity is at the low end of the
market, an area in which Moto has never really shined.

Make no mistake -- I have great respect for Moto, and wouldn't count it
out yet, but this latest downturn is a bad sign.
