Noticed something interesting today on the cingular website.. if you shop
for phones in the dallas area, only gsm phones show up now. is cingular
planning to drop support for the tdma phones? i know as recently as 3 days
ago they still had tdma phones listed for this area.

I've noticed that Cingular is no longer selling TDMA phones in St.
Louis, MO, either.  In Orlando, FL, Cingular is only offering 3 TDMA
phones (2 Nokia, 1 Motorola) and GAIT and GSM phones.  It looks like
maybe the Preferred Nation plan is on its way out for Cingular Nation
and Cingular Nation GSM?

Preferred Nation is gone by the wayside in Kansas City. If you have it
and like it, HANG ON!

Check out the National plans now being offered by Cingular here in
Kansas City. $55 for 500 minutes with 5000 N/W and rollover for $55
and NO ROAMING CHARGES.

The old Preferred Nation was better.  The new Nation plan is heavily,
heavily biased toward GSM.  Also, the phones on the Preferred Nation
plan were and are better than the two GAIT phones offered for the new
Nation plan.

Now, when GSM ramps up and is available in more areas--including remote
areas--and when Cingular offers more GAIT phones that are more reliable,
maybe the new Nation plan will look more attractive.  But I've looked
around, and I'm keeping my current Preferred Nation plan.  Like the
saying goes, they can have it when they pry it from my cold, dead
fingers.

Don't be fooled by the WEB site. Here in KC, TDMA plans and phones are
still offered. The local coverage area is different between GSM and
TDMA. The Cingular WEB site only shows the GSM plans.

I aplogize.  I should have mentioned that it was according to the website.

I just looked at their website yesterday afternoon and saw the
Nokia 6340i and Sony Erricson T62U (or whatever it is). When I
visited the store, they said the T62U was no longer offered due
to to many problems with it. They did have two other Nokia phones
that worked on the SuperHome plans that were TDMA and analog.

Both AT&T and Cingular will discontinue TDMA service, the exact date has not
been advertised. It was going to be March 1st of 2004, but this date was
from 3 years ago prior to the bad economy, and has been pushed back we are
told.
The TDMA carriers are changing to GSM service and returning the TDMA
frequencies in exchange for 800 mhz GSM frequencies.
We have spoken to several people testing the GSM 800 mHz service and this is
going to be great for rural service the GSM is covering a much larger area
than the TDMA was able to.

The same frequencies will be used. The GMS service is an overlay.

I really don't believe that TDMA will be discontinued next year. There
are too many TDMA phones out there. Probably Cingular will completely
discontinue offering TDMA phones and plans next year.

WHAT????

They are NOT returning any "frequencies"!!
There are no GSM frequencies!!!

What they are doing is overlaying the GSM on the 800MHz AMPS/TDMA frequencies
and will eventually turn off the AMPS and (probably) a few years later, the
TDMA.

I certainly wouldn't expect that the TDMA will go away within the next 10 years
or so. I DO expect that the carriers will stop selling TDMA only phones
sometime in 2004 however.

The part I haven't come to terms with is whether or not there are going to be
any more GAIT phones. For my purposes, without the TDMA/AMPS (currently) a cell
phone is lacking. I have the ATTWS DOR plan.

What do you do in the cellular industry? Sell cell phones?

And from your web page -

3595   ( GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900 / GPRS ) ( Digital / GPRS )

The 3595 is GSM 800/1900. No other frequencies.

I has *never* been March of 2004.  TDMA systems both with AT&T and
with cingular will continue in all likelihood for at *least* another 5
to 7 years if not longer.  If you made equipment that people have
obsolete in 6 months you're going to have a *lot* of really pissed off
subscribers who will then leave you and go to a company that won't
screw them over.  If you think the exodus of 11-24-03 is bad you
wouldn't see nothin' compared to the exodus you'd see if cingular or
AT&T pulled that stunt.

And how do you figure that the GSM service at 800 is going to reach
more area than the 800 TDMA service will?  The technology isn't going
to magically allow for greater coverage.  The only thing that
increases coverage is more base stations.  Technology whether TDMA or
GSM won't make a hill of beans' difference.

It would make sense that GSM could have a slightly larger broadcast
range than TDMA (I'm not saying that's it true, or even possible).  I
notice when traveling in the upper midwest that on both TDMA and CDMA
phones I will have digital for about ten to fifteen miles, then analog
for about 4 miles.  It's a perfect system -- digital, analog, digital,
analog...  On the T62u I will be able to compare coverage with GSM vs.
TDMA vs. AMPS.  I also have a CDMA phone lying around from the old days
with Cellular One.  I'll compare with that, too, and see if CDMA
coverage has improved.

You haven't given one bit of reason why GSM would have better coverage
range than TDMA or CDMA.  We're still waiting for your reasoning of
why GSM will propagate better than TDMA or CDMA.
