I just bought a sony ericsson t226 for use in the DAL market.  I notice that
in some parts of the metroplex, my phone goes to "Cingular Extend".  Does
this mean that the GSM signal is not reaching my phone in these areas or is
something else going on?  When they turned on GSM in Dallas/Ft. Worth, did
they overlay all points, or just major ones and then plan on going back to
fill in later?

When they turned it on they had all sites installed.

Fill in will probably happen but my guess is that you are going to see the fill
in in the form of the 800MHz overlay which is in process nationwide.

Where exactly did you see "Cingular Extend"?  I'm curious to see what
the 6340i on the GAIT plan shows there.  So far I've only "caught" the
phone back on TDMA in one area, near Cedar Hill in south Dallas.  But I
don't always leave it on field test (PITB) so could easily miss small
areas.  I really wish it had a GSM/TDMA/AMPS indicator--no it's not
"needed" but it sure would have been "nice" to have.

Jud,

I have noticed your reports of the TDMA service in Cedar Hill.  I continue
to get only TDMA on my T62u in Cleburne.  Have you tested that area?
Interestingly, once I get the TDMA signal in Cleburne, it doesn't change
when I drive back to Dallas unless I turn the phone off and back on.

Odd.  I came back through Cleburne Sunday and picked up Cingular GSM
around Chalk Mountain west of Glen Rose and never lost it into Dallas.
Including Cedar Hill so they may have just had a tower down before.  I
haven't noticed any extended delay in bumping back to GSM but then it
hasn't happened that often.  How long a wait before rescanning may be
phone specific too.

Southern Denton County area. Customer service sez that I will not be charged
roaming, even if it does Follow Me.  We'll see.  I wasn't able to see usage
yet on my minutes because not all my usage has been processed.  I hope that
it isn't being tagged as roaming and going to outcollect processing.  I
won't know for several weeks till that comes back.

What's strange is the phone will be in Cingular Extend at home and then
switch back to Cingular while still at home.  And later it may switch back
to Extend.  Signal quality appears to be the same however.  Actually, the
signal quality appears to be better when in Extend mode.

I've been in and around Lewisville and The Colony a lot and had very
good GSM coverage every time I checked.  But I'm using a GAIT phone
that's anything but easy to tell which system it's on so I could be
missing "pockets" where it's switching to TDMA--whereas a GSM-only phone
would go to Extended.  When it's showing Extended have you called 611 to
see who it is?  It's most likely T-Mobile but better check in case it's
actually Cingular with an IRDB problem.

It is tmobile.  I'm guessing they have a roaming agreement with them and
others, like Verizon?

I jsut asked Cingular that exact same question.
They said that some of their partner networks aren't quite up to speed yet.
I have a National plan, so "Cingular" and "Cingular Extend" are
interchangable for me.
If you have a different plan, it might have a different effect.

They swear that they will have comprehensive coverage in 2 years.  Maybe.
