Hopefully my post makes sense :) Currently am with Cingular and have a
Nokia 3360. Not terribly happy with the phone battery life - works for
about 45 mins and stops. Either way, would like a new phone and also am
considering ATT since I'm not under contract. Two questions - any reasons
why I should stay with Cingular over ATT?? And, if I did stay with
Cingular, can anyone recommend their preferred phone? I prefer Nokias with
a small form factor over flip phones. Haven't seen a compelling flip phone
to make me want to switch. However, the Nokia 3595 and 6200 don't excite me
all that much. I would love one of the small Nokia's - the 8390 or 8265,
but Cingular doesn't carry those. ATT doesn't have but the 8265 either - so
it's a tough choice. Anyways, this is rambling - just looking for some
suggestions/recommendations. Thank you!!

Go to shopping.yahoo.com and search around, and find a new battery for
about $15 shipped to your door.
I've had wonderful success getting 3360 batteries this way.

check out www.expansys.us for a bigger selection of unlocked Nokia
phones - make sure that you look for the ones with the 1900MHz (US) GSM
band - pop in your SIM and you're ready to go!

She has a Nokia 3360. That is a TDMA handset. TDMA handsets do not
have SIMs and it's unlikely that expansys carries any TDMA models. If
she wants to get a phone she'll have to get it from AT&T, ebay or
someplace like cellpoint.

The 8265 is a TDMA phone. In areas where Cingular has converted to GSM, they
don't offer TDMA phones any more. The 8390 is a 1900 GSM only phone.
Cingular uses both GSM 800/850 and GSM 1900 so they don't sell GSM 1900 only
phones either. Go to www.phonescoop.com and look for phones that are both
GSM 800/850 and GSM 1900.
A decision between carriers depends on where you want service. It doesn't
matter how great the phone looks if it doesn't have service where you want
to call.

So what happens to their national plans that require a multi-network
phone for TDMA or analog? Their National GSM looks pretty skimpy.
Granted that analog areas will be phased out and hopefully upgraded
to GSM, but that's a long way off.

Those plans require a GAIT phone which does AMPS, TDMA, and GSM. The Nokia
6340i and Sony Ericsson T62u are the only GAIT phones make. That's what you
need for maximum coverage.

Came to that conclusion. Only Nokia available in Dallas market, stores
say they are dropping the Sone T62u. Might be new offering after first
of the year.

What market do you live in? If service is important to you, the Nokia
6340i might be a good choice. I have that phone and seem to have
service everywhere. The only drawback for me, is that I'm roaming on a
TDMA network, and it takes a long time to start (about 10 seconds or so)
before it recognized TDMA roaming signal. If you're in a GSM market, it
shouldn't even matter. Plus, the 6340i has a SIM, which makes switching
phones a breeze on GSM networks.

I'm in Rochester, NY... GSM is supported here - but I honestly don't know a
whole lot about it. Some people say to stay away from GSM and get a TDMA
phone and some people say to embrace GSM. I think maybe the problem I'm
having after looking around is that the Cingular stores here just don't
offer a compelling phone for me. I like the smallness of the 3360 but they
don't have anything like that - it's the 3395 or the 6200. Then I hear
people saying ATT is so much better than Cingular, but yet ATT doesn't have
a store here. ATT has a wider selection of phones, but even they don't have
a small nokia other than the 8265 which is TDMA. Just was trying to stay
with Nokia, but it seems the trend is going to flip phones - even heard that
Nokia is introducing this week their first flip phone. Maybe they aren't as
bad as I think...

Forget what others are saying, who's using the phone? you or them?
What is a compelling phone?

Very true - has to be a phone I like and not someone else likes. A
compelling phone to me would be a small form factor, great battery life, and
if it has special features, great - but I don't need a ton aside from voice
and text. My 3360 battery is probably suspect - but I would like a newer
phone at any rate. I'm not opposed to flip phones, it just seems the nokias
are cool phones. Looked at the 3395 and maybe I'll get that - I just was
surprised it was longer than the 3360. It's so hard to pick phones because
a phone that 5 people love, 10 people will hate - and vice versa...

Are you sure you're talking about the 3395 and not the 3595? The 3395
and the 3360 are almost exactly the same length and have the same form
factor. Also the 3395 is almost three years old as far as design and
also doesn't have very good battery life.
Pick a phone that you like. It doesn't matter what someone else
likes.

Yeah, but pulling out a candy bar phone that actually thinner
than a candy bar sure is impressive and ego satisfying when people
comment on it. But I'm not THAT shallow...most of the time.

Actually, Nokia used to have analog-flip. My friend got one about six
years ago. He had problems with wires breaking in the flip mechanism
(near the hinge). But then again, I've heard that with Motorola, LG,
Audiovox, too.

My son has just upgraded from a 3360 to a 3560. However he had the 3360 for
well over 2 years and has never had the problem that you areexperiencing. He
talked a LOT to his girl freind on the "free" nites and weekends andhas never
had a problem with the battery.

I have 3 phones, a 3360 and 2 1260's using BMC-3 batteries.
They are working well. We don't talk a lot, but they're on all the time.
We use handsfree units while driving and they are kept charged.
If at home on a long call I plug in to a wall charger.
