My 8000 series Nokia w/Cingular shorted out.  I planned to replace with
a similar phone.  I'm now totally confused.  I liked the size of my old
phone and was relatively pleased w/reception.  I now purchased a 6590i
and have much worse reception.  Cingular tells me it is due to the move
from one network to another.  My questions.....

- how long will I have worse reception from this network conversion?

- should I buy a phone w/GAIT?  If so, what phone?

- I can also switch to Verizon or another carrier if I choose.  Should
I go to Verizon or someone else?  If so, what phone?

I'll appreciate some guidance.

GSM coverage should equal TDMA and CDMA coverage within the
next five years or so, but without AMPS coverage it will be decades
before you get as good coverage.

Only two choices. I'd get the Nokia based on the Sony-Ericsson
reputation.

All depends on where you live. In most, but not all, areas of the country
Verizon is a good choice, but it is the most expensive carrier.

Check the web sites below if any apply to you. They are independent,
unbiased evaluations of carriers in each area.

Atlanta: http://www.roamer1.org/wireless/atlanta.html (recommends Verizon)
New England: http://markson.net/cell_phones.htm (recommends Verizon)
Northern California: http://sfbacell.com/ (my site) (reommends Verizon
followed by AT&T TDMA)
Oregon & Pacific Northwest: http://cell.uoregon.edu/ (recommends AT&T
followed by Verizon)
Reno: http://renowireless.home.att.net/ (recommends Verizon)
South Dakota: http://meetmyattorney.com/cellular/ (recommendations vary by
city and by
intended use, Verizon recommended if you travel, and for 8.5/13 of the
cities)

The reception won't get better.  I would by a GSM phone. I had the same problem
and got the Motorola T720( GSM) phone and love it

I personally have had both Nokia and Motorla GSM phones
on Cingular.

I'd say the Motorola was slightly better, but in no way did
it solve the reception problem. The problem will be solved
when the network is more build out, and when GSM is
available at 800Mhz. GAIT is the only solution in the short
term.
