Hello, I'm new to the posts.  I'm just wondering what the abbrivation
DCS ment for those former Bellsouth(Now Cingular) markets in the
Carolinas that sold only GSM.  Did the letters DCS stand for anything?
I know this is a moot point since Cingular took over, but I hear
about it enough times on the forums that I have to ask. Thanks

Do you have an example of what context you heard this acronym?

DCS (Digital Cellular Systems) served the Kentucky, Tennessee, North
Carolina and South Carline markets. It was taken over by BellSouth
Mobility and called it BellSouth Mobility DCS (not to be confused with
BellSouth Mobility), which later became Cingular Wireless East.

DCS stands for digital cellular system. as in BellSouth Mobility DCS
the name of the GSM carrier in the Carolinas and eastern Tennessee
prior to becoming cingular when Southwestern Bell Mobility and
BellSouth Mobility and Bell South Mobility DCS combined to form
cingular wireless.

I think you forgot the SBC systems.....Which happens to be the majority of
Cingular. Just thought I'd mention it.

BTW, in 2-way radio parlance, DCS stands for Digitally Coded Squelch.

And what do you think Southwestern Bell Mobility is???  SBC originally
stood for Southwestern Bell Corporation in case you were unaware.

That's great, but we're not talking about 2-way radio we're talking
about digital cellular.

Just didn't see the need to list all eleven of them.
