Question:  if GSM phones are interchangeable between services (if they
are unlocked) why are Handspring / Cingular / T Mobile / ATT rolling
out the Treo 600 at differnt times, or even just saying that they may
not release it at all?  Cingular put the Treo 600 up for sale for the
Manhattan market, Tmobile has done nothing, and ATT tells me to wait
until christmas.  Is ATT doing something"special" for their Treos?
Shouldn't i be able to use an unlocked 600 from cingular with my ATT
service?  Why should I wait for ATT to release theirs?

thanks

JUST MY OPINION

Generally the cell companies do not sell unlocked phones, that's just
been my experience. But to answer your question, most of the hold-ups
would probably be due to testing the phone (GPRS, call quality,
settings, etc.) as well as market conditions. No one wants to be the
first to market with a $500 phone in a rough economy. If Cingular
sells 100,000 of them the first week, you can bet your sweet a.s that
T-Mobile and ATTWS will jump on the bandwagon.

If you get an "unlocked" Treo (like directly from Handspring), you can
use it on any provider. Be advised however, to use data services on
it, someone will have to give you all the correct settings. That's the
advantage of getting it from a particular provider (settings are
already programmed).

BTW, how much is Cingular in NY selling the phone for? I've been
waiting for one forever!!

You are welcome to buy mine. I have had mine for a week and I am not at all
impressed. Not that it's a big deal but I have had a pocket PC phone from
T-mobil for a year, they are pretty much the same but the PPC does a lot
more.. better. If you want it, reply in this group and I will email you
back, provided you give me a real email address. If not, wait for it. I hope
you like it.

Not often but sometimes a carrier will have the manufacturer hard code
settings such as browser data settings.
