Does a SIM chip have sort of 'battery'? How does it retain information when
not in a phone?

It has a built in thing call a flux capacitor. That generates 1.21
gig-a-wats.

Perfectly legitimate question.  After all, just because you apparently were born knowing everything there is to know does not mean the rest of us were so endowed.
