I have just completed a two year National contract having 250 anytime minutes and 3500 NW minutes with no roaming charges of any kind. Some cingular dealers say I can renew this same contract for another two years and purchase the Nokia 6340i phone for $50.00. This will allow me to use the GSM and TDMA bands. I understand the phone defaults to GSM. My concern is that if the GSM coverage is not as good as TDMA, and it always tries to stay on GSM. Will this be a problem? If it starts out on GSM and I run out of GSM towers, the call will be dropped. Has anyone tried doing this, and if so, how does the GSM network compare to TDMA in Connecticut? Is it worth while making this change? Is the voice quality any better on GSM? Some If you get the 6340i make sure that you specifically ask about roaming on an analog network. I too was told by two different reps that I would not be charged any roaming fees _at all_ on my plan. Imagine my surprise when $40 in roaming charges showed up. When I asked what was going on, they asked what type of phone I have. When I said the 6340i, the story changed. "Oh, well yeah, you must have been on an analog network, there is a roaming fee on an analog network." Like I was suppose to know this. Other than this experience Cingular and the 6340i have been great. David Wilkinson, Did you have to pay the roaming charge on the analog network after what they told you? Do you think it is possible to get them to specify no roaming charges at all with this 6340i phone? If I am exposed to new roaming charges, I may pass on this one. By the way, how did you find the coverage on the GSM network vs the TDMA? Did you drop many calls by going out of range of a GSM antenna? I don't know if they will waive the analog network roaming fees, as this is probably money out of their pocket. Fortunately for me I don't do that much travel and GSM covers virtually all of my home area. Would a roaming TDMA roaming agreement apply to the GAIT phone ? I would do some serious discussions with Cingular before I paid $40 on a plan that gives me nationwide coverage. I use the same combination (6340i w/ 250/3500 nationwide) & I was told by Cingular that I would not be charged for "Cingular Extended" because I have the Cingular Nation plan!! I now have a 5165 on the nationwide plan w/250/3500, which uses TDMA and analog. I have never received a bill for roaming, but don't know if I ever went into analog mode. Do you get many disconnects? I understand the phone will not go from GSM to TDMA without dropping the call. This could be a problem if the GSM coverage in not that good. Charles Ranheim Well, the phone seems to work fine...I have no experience w/ dropping of calls & signal strength is a big improvement over my Moto 62. Plus, it works well with Cingular's Fast Forward device. I had the software updated to the latest version. Charles > Ranheim The phone has excellent reception.as compared to any other phone I have had. I also have the same plan you have and have never been charged for roaming. That is in the national plan agreement. I switched to the 6340i about a year ago and to a lot of roaming and out of state use and have not been charged. Every thing is the same as far as the plan goes. You will be under the same contract. Does this statement mean some software in the 6340 phone can be updated or upgraded in some way? If the techs at nearby stores don't have the equipment or know how you would have to send it to a service center. Mine was sent and received back in less than a week I believe. I had a fuse go out so they updated software while it was in for that. |
