Hey guys,
Kind of a generic post, but I have friends who are moving to the Fairmont WV
(26554) area, and are looking for good cell coverage. They currently are
with Verizon, but out of
contract so specific carrier is not that important. I have visited near
Fairmont in Morgantown (several years ago), and had acceptable coverage with
Verizon, Sprint, and even my Nextel phones. Anyone who might have experience
near there, I would appreciate your thoughts on the current state of
coverage. Thanks in advance, Ken

This link has a few real world reception reports for Fairmont. Note that
the Sprint report is about a year old, so the limited EVDO coverage
comment may not apply anymore...

Verizon does not have native coverage in Fairmont, WV. The choices in
CDMA are US Cellular (a Verizon network partner) and Sprint. A
regional CDMA carrier in that area is nTelos.

For GSM, I know that AT&T Mobility (former Cingular) just purchased
Dobson Cellular in that area. I'm assuming T-Mobile is a choice there
as well.

The area of northern/eastern West Virginia (and western Maryland) does
not have native Verizon and uses USC instead.

When I was there in March, my Verizon phone "friendly roamed" (no
charges) on to US Cellular and worked just fine. I was in the area
around I-79, so I don't know how well they work in rural areas.

Verizon coverage in WV is good along the interstates and in the major cities
like Charleston, Clarksburg, Fairmont, Morgantown, Huntington, and
Parkersburg.   It's when you stray into the rural areas that coverage
suffers.
