I have an old Motorola P280, from T-Mobile. Now I have a Treo 600 on
Cingular. Weekends, I don't need to, or like to carry the Treo around. I
would like to be able to put my sim into the P280. However, it asks for a
subscriber code.. Anyone know the code to unlock this phone for use on
Cingular?

Are you still a t-mobile subscriber?
If so, call CS and ask them for the unlock code. It will usually take about
1 week before they give it to you.

Another option is to take it to a local shop that does unlock.. It usually
costs around $20.

No longer a Tmob subscriber. I called Cingular CS, they told me no way.
Wonder why, I have 11 active Cingular phones now (family and company.) You
would think they could do me a small favor......

If they've never sold that phone, they might not know how to unlock it.

Well, someone at Cingular would, but maybe not anyone you can reach
easily.  It's really T-Mobile's responsibility, or yours, not
Cingular's.

Cingular doesn't have the unlock codes for T-Mobile phones so they can't
give it to you.

There are unlock services that you can use, but don't blame Cingular for not
doing it. It's simply not cost effective for them to setup the
hardware/software to unlock all the phones on the market that they don't
support. Also it probably would raise some legal issues that their Lawyers
would advise against.

Cingular doesn't have the unlock codes for T-Mobile phones. It would not be
cost effective for they to try to setup the hardware/software to unlock all
the phones on the market that they don't carry, not to mention the legal
implications.

If you want to get it unlocked, use one of the services available, some of
which are free.

There is no generic unlock code.  Each handset has its own specific
unlock code.  If you didn't get the unlock code from T-Mobile while
you had service you're going to have to find some other way to get the
handset unlocked.

the handset is not locked. if  i put in the old t-mob sim, it sets up as
normal, just says 'no service.' if i put the cingular sim in, it says 'enter
subscriber system code.'

The handset *is* locked if it says to enter subscriber system code.
If it's a previously used SIM it's useless.  Once an account is
deactivated from a SIM card it's use is limited to checking out if
someone else has their phone unlocked.

When the handset is locked, that means that only a valid SIM from the
provider who locked it will work with the handset.  Thus, the handset is
locked, and so the Cingular SIM makes the phone generate "Enter
Subscriber System Code".  The T-Mobile SIM, which is no longer active,
will not come up with that same message.  I am willing to be that if you
put an AT&T SIM or a Cellular One SIM in your phone, it will probably
generate the same "Enter Subscriber System Code" message.

Thanks. I looked in the phone book and found a place about 8 blocks from my
house that will unlock the phone for $8.00. Seems reasonable. Beats
Cingulars idea of paying $85.00 for a referbed Siemens phone, just to use
two days a week.

That sounds like a subsidy lock- T-Mobile "locked it" so it will only
operate with a T-Mobile SIM.  Any other provider's SIM makes the
handset prompt you for the unlock code before accepting the SIM.
Reichart - 10 Dec 2003 17:41 GMT
Right. There are places all over and on the internet that will remove the
sub locks for $8.00 - $12.00. Great deal! Whay spend hundreds on a phone
when you can just unlock one for a very few bucks.

T-Mo will actually give you the unlock code as long as you are still a
customer and have had the phone over 90 days.  (I realize this doesn't help
you right now, but maybe it'll help the next guy!)

the subsidy or subscriber code is a code put in place by th
manufacturer for the particular cell phone company. motorola won't giv
them out.. and as a cingular rep, we dont have them to give. the compan
the phone is branded by is the only way to get them. you can buy them o
eBay though...
