I have a TDMA handset on the old 250/3500 Nation plan in the Boston market. I'd
like to replace the handset, but the customer service representatives insist
I'd have to change plans. Which I'd prefer not to do, as the new plans
are not as attractive as my plan. Has anyone else had this experience? (I'd
like to get the Nokia GAIT phone.)

At least here, in Chicago, you can upgrade to a GAIT phone and keep your
older Nation Rate plan.

I did exactly the same thing you want to do no problem. I have a 6340i. The
smucks are trying to sell you on a new plan. You do not need a new plan .
Call cingular.

Talked to two different cingular customer service reps with the same story...
In the end, I ended up acquiring a refurb. TDMA phone for 50$ with no contract
commitments. Guess I'll stick with TDMA until I start seeing coverage holes...

Those CS reps are nuts, I saw the 6340i online for $29.99 for all cities in
MA, It would re-up your same nation plan for 2 more years. I did this in
the Detroit market in late 2002 when they had GSM up. They sell the nation
(GAIT) plan for MA, that requires a multi-network phone ie. Nokia 6340i.
