How do I get my phone to ring more than 3 or 4 times before it
forwards to my voice mail.  Sometimes it forward before I get the
phone out of the belt holster.  Nokia 6340i if that makes any
difference.

There is a user setting under forwarding on the 6340i when it's
operating on GSM but that may only work for non-VM forwarding.  You can
call customer service--I know they can change the time even on TDMA
since I've done it before.  HOWEVER, it's by time and I think 30 seconds
is max so whether it'll be more than 4 rings.....

That site will tell you how to make the ring longer, but they are GSM
commands. I don't kow if they will change the TDMA/amps ringtime or not. And
as Jud said, 30 seconds, I believe is the longest.

Well, keep in mind that there are several factors involved. First the system
must find you (the caller hears a ring in the mean time).  Then of course your
phone rings. The number of rings is set by the carrier and you cannot change
it. The number of rings YOU hear are not necessarily the number of rings that
are sent.

Being the "expert" I'm surprised you are not aware that ringing time
before forwarding is very possible in many cases.  Many handsets have
a setting in the forwarding menus to change the delay before forward.
Those that do not you can always use the "star-hash" codes such as are
listed at http://www.wynasia.com/gsm_standard_codes.htm .  Before you
say that there's no way to change the delay time it might have been a
good idea for you to check it out.

I don't think that will change the ring time for the TDMA/AMPS side of his
phone, only the GSM. I think he will have to call CS if there is no setting
on the 6340i to change ring time for the TDMA/AMPS part, unless by changing
the GSM ring time using those codes, it does a global reset of ring timers.
Does anyone know?

Actually, Jason, although there are timers set that you can set to drop to
Voice Mail with GSM, the number of times that the carrier will ring the phone
before going to voice mail is set by the carrier. They will not change it for
each individual.

I'll drop it when you drop the "attitude" that you are the be all and
and end all of knowlege about things cellular.  I don't give a flying
fig if you've installed 10,000 cellular sites the bottom line is that
you posture yourself as some sort of expert and there are lots of
things that you are just flat out wrong about and of course you would
never admit such.

I have no attitude.

Let's compare who gets paid for what to make their living. Whatdayasay to that?

I am a consulting Engineer and design Cellular communication systems. I have
designed, installed, tested and integrated systems for Cingular, AT&T WS (GSM
of recent times), T-Mobile (Voicestream), and United States Cellular.

I have also designed and installed trunked radio systems using GE, Ericsson
(now GE too), and Motorola - including Nextel.

I have designed, installed tested and turned up Fiber Optic systems around the
world as well as Microwave systems around the world. "Around the world"
includes the USA, Differing countries in the Caribbean, Africa, Pakistan,
Thailand, Taiwan, Japan and Vietnam (recent year Vietnam).

I get paid a lot of money for my ability and knowledge. If I am wrong, I will
of course admit it. But when I am wrong. Not just when Joseph thinks I am.

Your turn........

Which still don't mean diddly squat.  Perhaps you do know about
installing cellular systems.  That doesn't mean that you know
everything else about cellular systems as you are always so eager to
volunteer.  I've never installed a cellular system but I know how to
read.  You've made many statements about phones or operation of
systems that are just flat out mis-statements.  I don't doubt that
you've installed bazillions of systems.  That doesn't mean that you
are the be-all and end-all of information about things cellular.

Call CS. Request more ring time before the forward to VM. The default is 3
rings; they can double to 6. It is not an exact ring count due to numerous
variables in the way the network operates.

On the 6340i, go to your call forwarding menu, there will be an
option for Set Delay Time. It's really simple if you'd just look at
your damn phone.
