I finally found and purchased the Data Connect CD and installed it on my HP
laptop. Phone is connected via cable. When I try connecting using Cingular
wireless internet it dials but fails to connect giving me the msg "remote
server failed to respond in a timely manner".
When I try my dial-up account it dials and connects but fails during
"authentication". Since it's a wireless copy of my dial-up account I know
the username and password are correct.  I even re-entered them to make sure.
I use Earthlink btw.  The wireless internet works ok when I use it on the
phone itself.  So anybody have any ideas?  Thanks.

Is the 6340i in TDMA or GSM mode when you try the connection?

While working on a friend's computer who uses Earthlink, I found I could
not connect using the built-in dial-up modem. As soon as I installed the
Earthlink Total Access program, the connect worked perfectly. I believe
the problem had to do with a compression protocol necessary for
Earthlink. I the Cingular site also use a compression protocol. As a
start, see if a friend will give you access to his/her plain jane isp
account and try connecting to that. If this works, then you've isolated
the problem and can work on from there.

Is your account provisioned for Wireless Internet?  Until Cingular
adds WI to your account, your phone will just "spin it's wheels" when
you try to connect.

Well I got it working, although I'm not sure how.  It seems to hinge on the
phone's battery strength.  I've had success connecting when the phone is
either plugged in to the charger or when the charge is still relatively
fresh.  After 70% or so problems begin to arise.  Also I have found that if
the signal strength is much lower than 65% the connection will fail.  Thanks
for all the feedback.

I do use a charger when connecting but mine works down to total discharge of
the battery ( the phone turns off not complete discharge)  when not using
the charger. Your phone may have a problem, the phone should adjust to the
drop in the battery, Li-ion battery works over a larger swing in voltage and
with 3.6 volt battery the phone must adjust. The problem maybe in the
cable/serial interface not adjusting to the lower battery voltage. First try
a different cable then a different phone and last a different computer till
you find the weak/bad part.
