What has the cell company said when you called them?
Keep in mind that data usage is quite expensive without a data plan. And laptop
usage can use a lot of time without you realizing it AND a lot more "mega-bits"
than you would think!

That one's charged by the minute, just like voice calls. If you've
gone over your included minutes because of it...
What number does your laptop dial to connect? If it's *99# instead of
a "real" phone number then you WERE using WI Express, and were charged
by the kb.

Not if there is actually an error. Plus, Cingular is good about
"rerating" people. For example, les say you're on a 400 minute plan
for $40, but you used 2000 minutes this month. If you catch it before
the bi l cycle ends, they'll switch you a bigger plan that month, to
reduce your overage charges.

What "similar dilemma"- you still haven't told us for sure WHY you
have a $1700 bill- did you get charged for minutes, data, roaming, a
six-pack of new phones, was it an error or did you really rack up
$1700 in legit charges, perhaps unwittingly.
If you want help or sympathy you need to tell us more than "my bill is
$1700! Help!"
> can anyone help with advice from experience, or the
> proper government official to contact?
Government officials generally don't strongarm wireless companies to
reduce legitimate bills! If it's an error, then some bureaucratic
input might help, once you've exhausted any resolution with Cingular
itself. If the bill's legit, your best bet is to negotiate a smaller
amount and set up a payment schedule. Cingular would rather get some
of their money than none (if you file bankruptcy, for example, or
simply turn tail and not pay them.)

I downloaded a PDF copy of my bill, and the roaming minutes were $1505...I'm on
the 'Nations' plan, which never charges me for roaming or long-distance, ever.
Upon speaking to the rep, she said that the girl who set me up on that plan did
not enter the code that exempts all the roaming charges at the time the billing
cycle is closed out (which is odd, because I've been on this plan since
November of last year, and I haven't faced any roaming charges, and have roamed
all over the country). She then claimed she must submit some kind of "credit
form", for management to approve such a large credit to my account. However, I
did use the RECORD feature on my 6340i, and recorded her telling me that I'm
not responsible for any of the roaming charges (after I advised her that she
was being recorded)...
All my time on the laptop was on my N&W, and didn't go over...and it wasn't
charged by the Kb, thank goodness...I'm using a 10digit dial up number...
And, while it seemed that I perhaps overreacted a little, I was merely
bracing myself for the worst, which I dealt with on a Verizon calling plan a
few years back, and won, due to diligence and stubborness. When you're right,
you're right...(that's a whole other posting!)
Thanks much, ladies and gentlemen...now I just hope the 'credit voucher' or
whatever it is gets approved by management...if not, then it's WAR!!

> I downloaded a PDF copy of my bill, and the roaming minutes were $1505..
Please don't tell me that you're on some sort of auto pay, where you
don't get a bill in your hands to review before you send payment.
That is just pure danger, especially with respect to the cell phone
companies. Their billing and customer service is so screwed up, you
risk quite a bit by letting them automatically take whatever they think
they're owed.

You're getting a line of bullshit.
Whatever you do, make them send you a paper bill, complete with billing
detail, in the mail for you to review before you send them payment.
Let's face it: cell phone companies frequently send out random bills
with no basis in reality.

customer service reps can only credit up to a certain amount, and anything over
that($500 i think) they have to submit to a manager.

If your plan is "nation" you are ok.
If your plan is "preferred nation" your screwed.
If "nation" then when the bill is finally calculated then all the
extra roaming charges fall off.
With a 6340 your ONLY internet option is CSD. That is charged by the
min and not kb.
So in theory you can rake up the min by using the phone for a "data"
call.
Find our your exact "peak" time and hope you are under your plan, If
not then ask NICELY for a rep to push you up a plan and BACKDATE it.
Be aware of the backdating as you will pay the difference for last
month then the new month. Since C bills a month in advance.

Think that's bad? This is unrelated to your situation, but is
ineresting, I work for USC in wisconsin, at their collections
department, a lady called in wanting to know what to pay to reconnect
the service, after pulling up her account, and then my jaw dropped, I
had to rub my eyes, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. $17,000 ,
yes SEVENTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS, and some change...I think the whole
call center heard her say WHAT!!!???? I said, that's got to be
wrong.. After digging around for a few minuets, she had 3 bills of
about $4000, $6000, $7000 give or take a few hundred.. All calls from
down in tampa florida.. USC does not have service in Tampa FL.. I said
thats all roaming charges, thus you are responsible for them.. She
states she thought she had free nights and weekends & long distance
while roaming...

You mean to say she actually confessed those calls were hers? Jeez
Louise!! With a signed confession, it's hard to pin something like this
on an AMPS clone.

I had something close here in Florida.
I looked up a account to see the person owed $7000+
Turns out she thought her N+W included INTERNATIONAL calls.
NOT!!!!
